I didn't want the doors to lock automatically after bringing it home called the salesmen up and he said bring it in. Took a whole five minutes or less free. Dealers just don't get it they would monopolize repairs if they brought their prices down within this atmosphere.

No worries, happy to help. In the 3rd link, Blackstone recommended the owner try a 12k interval for his next analysis.

Oil change intervals are a source of contention on every forum. Lots of people swear that wear metals actually decrease with a longer interval, because detergents are much stronger when oil is fresh. I honestly don't know if it's true, but if it is true, you will see less wear metals with one 10k inveral than you will with two 5k intervals. Not to mention you would be saving a few bucks, and not wasting resources.

Bottom line, the Toyota engineers didn't pick the oci numbers out of their butts. 10k is a conservative interval for normal use. 5k is a VERY conservative interval for extreme use. Every single uoa I have seen backs this up.

I forget where but years ago I read an article that said you can actually change your engine oil too often.

I've always changed out the factory oil in new vehicles in the first 1000 miles or so due to all of the crap in the oil from the engine breaking in. But, I'm an old hot rodder and am basing that practice on building engines 30 years ago. Maybe Toyota uses a minimum of assembly lube and the tolerances are such that you don't get a bunch of metal shavings and other debris in the oil right off the bat.

I've also heard that running synthetic oil before the first 10k miles doesn't allow the engine to properly break in.

I don't know. I'm open to new opinions and facts. Like I said; my experience is based on decades old data and evidence. I could be completely wrong in my thinking, now.

I think it really depends on the application. For example you are an old hot rodder, I would absolutely change the oil out in the first 1k on a vehicle like that and I would back up all day everyday in that argument. Or any drag racing or track car for that matter... My reason being it that typically those motors are a miss mosh of different aftermarket parts to achieve one goal...power to go fast. Most aftermarket parts or engine machining are not tested for reliability or longevity. Where as a mass produced motor is because the manufacturer needs to find the best balance of power, mpg's, longevity, and reliability. Now some manufacturers are better than others (I think Toyota is one of the best... I value reliability and longevity the most). For example I would not do 10k oil changes on the Ford Eco Boast engines because they are having a problem with oil getting real dirty real quick causing the oil to dilute badly. And I have met people who just who didn't really care. I took over my wife's car, which she bought brand new, at 90k to commute with (2009 V6 Honda Accord) and I got 175k before I traded it in. A family member took care of the car for her and used Walmart dino oil and followed the oil monitor which usually went off at about 7500k. That car had a pristine engine with zero sludge...go figure cause it always baffled me.

On my Tacoma I typically change the oil every 12,500 miles. Occasionally I get the oil analysed by blackstone labs. Their last analysis suggested I could go to 14,000 miles. Brand of oil doesn't matter, I use Walmart supertech quite frequently. Whatever is on sale is what I use. I do run synthetic since I extend my oil changes.

I agree with you brand really doesn’t matter. What I meant to point out it that even a non-synthetic oil can safely be used longer than originally thought with zero issues. So there is no reason a any API synthetic can’t go 10k especially in the 4.0 motors...

I think being able to run 10,000 miles on an oil change is incredible. Versus every 3,500 in earlier models. That’s almost three times as much, saves so much time and money....Guess the bearing tolerances have a lot to do with it? Computer and machining advancements...

Attached is an oil analysis of the factory oil at 2200 miles prior to it's first oil change.

Use it to support whatever side of the fence you are on.

Kinda makes me wish I had done my first oil change early.

I wonder if the abrasives were due to break-in..

Since I off-road, tow occasionally, and tend to drive the truck hard, I think I'll be sticking with 5K from here on out.

I just drove about 5k towing a trailer through mountains and such. I will do another sample with this oil as well.

I am using AMSOIL right now, but I am running a comparison between AMSOIL and Toyota's through analysis reports. If I don't see much of a difference in the reports I am going to stick with Toyota's oil.

So I have a few more reports to go off of still. The first was just to see what the factory oil had it it after a few thousand miles and I will not use that in my comparison. I totally expected the results I got: high moly and high abrasives from wear in.

I figured I would share what I got from the report for those who like data.

10k oil change. For some reason the display I guess on the 2020’s changed to that. Just refer to the manual though, should give you the accurate response.

If you're towing, going through dusty areas, or encountering big temperature changes often that would be considered extreme (according to the manual).

I drove 3K miles in the first week when I went to Moab on a trip that had been planned for my Jeep, but got death wobble. The rest of the time it has been in 50-80 degree weather. No towing. Not dusty. The other 2K miles have been basically city driving of less than 3 miles a day until the last month when I had to find a county that wasn't shut down that I could coach soccer at a park. Now driving longer distances on highway. None of these things sound extreme. The dealership said it was weird that it would pop up and not required until 10K.

So mostly highway miles, some city driving, no dust, and no towing.

You sir, are the perfect candidate to change your oil at 10k.
