I am not up to date on their current products but when I did use the Signature Series in 2012ish, it did not have the API stamp which made me apprehensive cause I was still under warranty. Additionally I have used their gear oil and ATV products. No complaints at all with the quality...ordering online only and membership/pricing was a drain on my wallet and time.

Ordinarily I like to see folks do their own googling, but this took all of 10 minutes. This guy stated his daily commute consists of short trips where his engine may or may not even reach the full operating temperature. The uoa he posted was for Toyota 0W-20 oil at 9925 miles. Blackstone said the oil still had life left in it (TBN of 1.8), even though his daily driving pattern falls under the "extreme" operating conditions outlined in the owner's manual where Toyota recommends a 5k oci:
    https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2415119#Post2415119

Even in a new truck that isn't even broken-in, the oil held up like a champ under "severe" operating conditions for 10k miles. Notice the wear metals aren't any higher than they would be with two seperate 5k oil changes.

This looks pretty good from the last post on factory oil. I cannot open the other reports in the first three posts with my phone and will read them when I get to a computer.

Thanks for linking. Normally when I ask someone to backup their claim to reports they get all huffy about it.

Thanks for the information. People are blinded by the marketing when it comes to oil, auto fluids in general. I get the cheapest in the proper viscosity.

There's no way I'm running a brand new engine for 10k without changing the oil, I don't care what the manual says.

I also don't care about getting an oil analysis.

I change the oil for my own satisfaction and peace of mind, and it's cheap as shit to do it, so why not do it more? I changed the oil at 1k, 5k, and every 5k after, and before any long trip even if outside the 5k interval.

I love how on a forum dedicated to taking care of your shit somehow guys who change their oil a lot at the hideous cost of $30 each time are fools... meanwhile the guys mocking them have $6k worth of off road accessories and never even use 4wd...

    In other words:

You reject Toyota engineers oil change interval recommendations.

You reject independent oil change analyses that back up what the engineers recommend.

And you're confused as to why people poke fun at unnecessary oil change intervals?

Been away from Toyota for awhile. Is factory oil same as the dealer sells? Just curious, thanks

    Seriously
Oil is cheap why would you want to risk anything that may cause an issue?
Skip an applebees or tgiFridays and dump that shit - its the life blood of the heart of your beloved 4runner. Its not hard & gets you under your ride so you can see if anything else looks amiss

It is the same. I was referencing the oil in the engine from the factory.

Gotcha, I was wondering if Toyota brand is good to run with. coming from the Ford side, tests showed motorcraft brand was just fine

I would trust the manufacturers oil, unless it comes from a bulk drum that is never cleaned or maintained. I have worked at a dealer service department and dont really trust the quick lube guys that much. Most of the time the good technitians pawened off the oil changes to the hourly guys. Oil changes didnt pay enough for a commissioned guy to live on.

What I'm saying, in exact words, is it's fucking stupid to spend $700 on a Gobi ladder but only change your oil every 10k.

I only started using it because I read many good things about Toyota labeled Oil at Bob is the oil guy. It seems to be one of the best OEM manufacturers oil out currently. I believe it’s made by Mobil. You can read quite a few reports in different applications in which the used analysis came back excellent. And if you are willing to shop around you can get it about for about only 5 to 10 bucks more than buying Pennzoil/ Mobil 1/Castrol from Walmart.

So you don’t listen to your manual on certain major service intervals? Don’t listen to it for torq specs, part numbers, etc?

By your mindset, everything the Toyota manual says is BS and should be tossed in the trash can and you should just do things the way you think they should be done.

    I have to disagree.

I changed the oil in my '03 every 10K. I traded it in with 257K and the engine ran perfectly. It still sounded new (aside from the exhaust manifold leak.

Toyota recommends 10K, with the exception of extreme conditions.

I drive 25-35K a year. My time is valuable. I know that a 10K interval is not going to hurt my engine.

Why would I waste $30 and an hour of my time on unnecessary maintenance?

If you want to piss away your time and money for extra peace of mind, I have nothing against it. But, don't call other people stupid for doing what the manual recommends.

I change oil every 5k. If nothing else it gives me a reason to crawl around and see how much rust is accumulating on the frame and check suspension, exhaust and drive shafts. You know weekend guy stuff and yes I embrace my toxic masculinity.

    This I agree with.

All I'm saying is that it's not "stupid" to do the 10K interval, unless you use the truck in ways that fall under extreme use.

I did the 10K changes on my previous 4runner because I didn't off-road, and only towed a light boat on occasion.

I'm hitting a lot of trails in my 2019, so I might go with 5K just because of the dusty conditions and other stress that comes with off-roading.

Otherwise I would stick with 10K

Frequency of oil changes is subject to vehicle use, time and type of oil. If heavy use, mileage, or at one year maximum, regardless of use or mileage, I change oil. I also use only synthetic oil because all synthetic oils are hydro treated. That means the oil molecules are longer and therefore have lower viscosity. As oil wears, the molecule chains break, making the oil more viscous (thicker) and therefore does not lubricate
    as well.

No one is wrong here as the manual states 5000 and 10000 mile changes are appropriate depending on your usage.

Absolutely no agreement, as oil change frequency depends on how heavy use, dusty, mileage as recommended, or if low mileage or seasonal use, once/year.

It is worth while getting acquainted with the oil specs for Toyota factory fills. This is because
if you use oil that does not meet the specs, your warrantee will be void. Here is an anecdotal story for you. Years ago when I was working off shore in the Arctic on an Exxon off shore rig, the Cat diesel generators failed twice. Catepillar replaced them on warrantee as Exxon was a large customer. After the second time, they determined that Exxon was using their own oil instead of the oil stipulated by Catepillar, which was hydro treated oil. Exxon's oil specs did not meet Catepillar's recommended specs, and was upset being told Cat would not honor the warrantee again unless Exxon used oil that matched or exceeded Cat's recommended oil specs. Exxon did not like having to use a competitor's oil, but there is an example of what can happen when you use oil when the oil specs don't meet or exceed the oil specs used by and recommended by the manufacturer.
Getting back to Toyota, you don't need to use their oil, but make sure the specs of what ever brand you use, match or exceed the Toyota brand specs.
