I'm also thinking about the MT BB for my next set. I would rather have XL than SL or E like McSpaz in the 285. I thought about going down a size to 275, but they no make. I'll probably go with KO3 in C load, unless someone has really good things to say about MT BB in SL in 285. I'll have to go back and re-read this thread.

Mickey Thompson's load rating and max PSI's are all over the place. Their website indicates only their LT sizes get their extra tough layer. I agree though, they certainly don't make it clear what the hell XL is.

While not answering your question, and quite anecdotal, I've been running the SL 285's since I made this thread without issue. Again anecdotal, but the only tire sidewalls I've blown out were D's.

I know we reeeeeeally like to run C+ on 4Runners and Tacomas but I just dont think with modern construction is really applies anymore.

Give them a try and I think you would like them.

Like many, I also get confused with all the nomenclature and it is clear that there is a ton "marketing" BS in how all the tire manufacturers position their products. Many weird claims and performance this and performance that etc, and funny enough, many of these tires get manufactured in the same plant under different labels and segments - How do I know? A friend works for Goodyear at the top and let me in a few :gossip:. In any event, my take on the MT is that they are very capable offroad. Better than the K02 and AT3 in my case; however, with that comes the extra noise on the HWY. That's just reality there, you get performance in one side but debit on the other one. There is good plot that I can't find to save my life that we use for showing PSI against load C, E, etc and that kind of explains a lot of things. I can't get this stuff right anyway....I always know, the better or tougher it looks the louder this $hit will be. I tell you what.....here is a guy you can ask, and he will give you a solid unbias response. Ask DJ @djwantke. He will tell you what he thinks.:D

    thanks @ChessGuy lol !
most folks surely are sick of my responses and thoughts.
but, I’ve never had XL’s (or an SL A/T), but the load E have been brilliant. they get noisier in higher miles like any tire, but a higher level of noise simply because they’re a badass hybrid tread.
also, I dunno why their website data is all over the place. I wanna know more about SL & XL like @McSpazatron, cuz i want lighter 35s. MT is a good rain tire tho I know that.

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from, and it’s good to get sanity checks on some of the stuff we do, maybe unnecessarily. I like the idea an SL tire, because I know how much unsprung weight affects everything. And I really like the idea of rolling down the road on cushy balloons :D.

And then there is the legitimate question: Does a higher load rating mean better puncture resistance and tougher sidewalls? I can’t say I’ve seen anything that definitively *proves* that’s the case. But since I drank the Kool Aid and think they are tougher, I’d love to find any actual evidence that fits my narrative lol
    :p:anonymous:

In my case, I’ve personally witnesses two flats on fairly new K02s Load C tires on somebody else’s 5th gen. Both flats happened on the same day, on the same 4runner, on the same trail I had driven down only minutes before. The trail was paved with football sized granite shards. I was running the same exact tire (besides being 33 vs 32in) with a similar level of wear. That’s the experience that has me locked into not going any lower than a load C. And I won’t go Load E just because I drive this thing too much on paved roads and don’t want to hobble myself with that much unsprung weight.

Argh!! I kind of feel like I’m right back to where I was last time I looked at this thread. I thought hard about the MT BBs, but just ended up going with a known quantity and got another set of KO2s load Cs again. The second set has been good to me as well, so now it’s even more of a known quantity.

All my research will probably make me have a mental breakdown. You’ll know it happened if you see me rollin on 34 inch Load E mud tires :p

Well, I dont think you can get the MT on 34s. So that should help you narrow your dilemma. I think next year I will get on the 34s bandwagon.

Honestly I used to be the "steel is real" and E load guy until I just kinda stopped. I know I'm not climbing a volcano, but I still want capability. So far the SL has been totally fine. Whenever I'm driving in a somewhat sketchy area, (shale, tree stumps, etc.) I just kinda take it easy. So far so good!

If it helps tip the scales for you, I had KO2's on my Tacoma. Great tires, but I I'll be sticking with Mickey's from now on.

Also, I'm the guy with aluminum bumpers, skids, rock sliders and SL tires so who knows maybe I'm the idiot haha
