I’m almost due for the 15k mile service on my ’24. I looked up the recommended actions, and that list is easily something I can tackle on my own. My dealer’s service department isn’t open on Saturdays, so getting over there for a service will cost me a half-day off work… I’m not up for that, for a service this light.

What I don’t know, though, is how to deal with the propeller shaft. The service list says it should be lubricated, and the prop shaft bolt should be re-torqued. So the questions are natural: what lubricant, and how much torque?

    Thanks, all.

All the are going to do is check your filters and hopefully clean the throttle body. Nothing else to do. There's really nothing to do until about 100k honestly and do everything then again at the next 100k. I worked for Toyota and it's the same maintenance sheet we used 25 years ago except none of it applies to these newer models. Filter and fluid changes are about all the maintenance now. Transmission fluid and coolant change at 60-75k is good. Just drain and fill only. I change everything every 100k and forget until next time. 15, 30, 60k are a lot of filter checks. 90-100k is where you want to change all fluids, plugs, check filters. Find an honest mechanic. If there is such a thing anymore.

This is the most resilient truck I've had. Oil changes and it just jeeps going.

I have always used Mobil 1 oil, Toyota or Wix filter and changed every 10k. There will be no sludge, fewer leaks with age and it's pretty indestructible for oil. 4runners have water cooled oil and with 6.6 quarts of synthetic, it really extends oil life and less chance of having your skid plate bolts stripped by an oil kid and his new impact. Mine had a 120k maintenance in its history but I couldn't tell that anything had been done. At 169k the spark plugs had a 0.77 gap when it's supposed to be 0.44 and it never missed. Apparently never replaced. I worked for an honest dealership, but I don't trust anyone anymore. I buy the tools, special tools and whatever to do myself. They are a lot easier than the factory maintenance schedule and you can afford to eat afterwards. I replace Denso TT 100k plugs, Mobil 1 75w90 diffs and case, synthetic power steering fluid, synthetic brake fluid every 100k. I use Toyota antifreeze, distilled water and transmission fluid every 60-100k. Just drain and fill, no flush. I use K&N cabin air filter that's washable. The Car Care Nut on YouTube can teach you a lot. He's a Toyota master tech and covers everything Toyota. I'm at 240k+ and mine has no leaks and it's AWD. I have had to rebuild the front CV axles earlier than ever, but it may be the AWD and constantly turning. Always rebuild your axle if it has a busted boot. That's all that is bad. It's a $400 axle at Toyota and designed to last the life of the truck. Boot kit with everything is $46 from Toyota. It's nasty but quite easy to do. Better than a $75 Chinese axle.

I'm just impressed with mine at 240k. No squeaking or rattling, engine is finally broken in and it runs so much better. To me, they really start running better after 200k. Even at 300k using Mobil 1, there will still be hatch marks on cylinder walls and not a drop of sludge anywhere. Synthetic oil helps keep your VVTI filters clean. Just a little of the right thing will make it last forever. It's the most reliable 4wd I have ever owned that you can drive the wheels off. Only shuts off at gas stations and parts stores are for washer fluid only. Also, if you still have original wiper blades, you can get Toyota rubber inserts for $6 each. Still the best I have used. Aftermarket didn't work on mine well.

Plus one on factory wiper inserts for the best function.

I priced front axle individual parts and they were all $126 each for each item. I thought that was strange. ToyotaPartsDeal.com has cheapest OEM parts, however you need to research the correct part number somewhere else and maybe call a dealership parts department to get correct number. I Groogle and search ebay for correct part numbers. I haven't returned any parts to them yet.

I was watching a NYC TV station years ago and they rated Toyota best factory wiper. Mine had Bosch skipping across the windshield when I bought it. I bought some Hella 2.0 knowing better and they were no good. I ordered Toyota blades with new inserts for $22 each and they were Japanese like the inserts. I did have PN#s for them.

This was the same scenario I experienced when I was a Nissan/Infiniti Tech in the 90s and 2000s before the body joint issues started rearing their ugly head.
Those factory inserts if changed regularly performed very well.

It should be greased every oil change if they are worth anything. If you wanted to do a dealership maintenance, a 60k and 120k as long as they change coolant and transmission fluid each time. Everything else can be done at 120k. I called 3 dealers within the area and the bigger the town, the higher the price for the same transmission fluid change. $400, $230, and $106 where I used to work for 4-5 quarts and a hour job that takes about 30 minutes to do. The first two tired selling a flush. My old dealer priced exactly what I asked for. So some don't want my business and think I'm stupid. $40-50 is fluid cost.

All these seemed to sit up to high and skip. The blades I got looked more Lexus with the contoured wind channels. I hadn't seen that on older blades.

Well, I had good results and was simply passing along my information. As everything, you mileage may vary from my opinion or experience.

It really is! I'll be like.. hmm I can go through that desert for 45 mins and then just get back on the highway like nothing.

I've mistakenly jumped two curbs like I was a kid on a bike.. and it just keeps going!!

I have started to develop a steering wheel shake when I brake heavily but other than that this truck is solid.

I am always looking at auto trader for another low mileage one!!

Steering shake under heavy braking on a high mileage vehicle is probably control arm bushings. Not a huge job
