    It's more similar to a 70 series Landcruiser than a 4Runner.

Plus, we already have a sub-forum for the 5th gen's spiritual successor..

In 2019, when the G-wagon got its first real redesign since its inception. Front suspension became independent, and steering became rack & pinion. Width grew by 5".

Oh oh, them’s fightin words around here! :D

@Captain Spalding , I was thinking the similarity to the 4runner was more about the fact they’re both wagon style 4x4s. My metric is not just about off-road capability, but also whether it makes a good place for self-contained camping.

Admittedly the 4 door jeep comes close, but it’s not quite big enough for all the utility a wagon brings.

Isn’t the grenadier more expensive than a gx?

Yes. But, the base price is a few thousand less than an Overtrail+.

I tell you what, if we could get the 70 Series in the states I wouldn’t have posted this to begin with. Toyota makes some great models for the rest of the world but somehow we get the trailings.

By that reckoning, i.e. discounting the offroad capability, a Subaru Forester is superior to the 4Runner. Its cargo space is both flatter and longer.

The 4Runner is a jack-of-all-trades. And that’s great. But let’s not forget the rest of that saying. Master of none. You can tow with it, but not that much. You can sleep in it, with the caveat that you’re short, but if not then some disassembly is required. You can fit larger tires, but it requires determination. The only place where it excels is reliability. We’ll have to wait and see if that’s as true for the 6th gen as it has been for the 5th.

I meant it was my metric (both wagons) for justifying, in jest, a Grenadier subforum here on the 4runner forums.

The good thing is the Grenadier depreciates as quickly as other European vehicles, so low mileage used ones are cheaper. Here's one that lost $20k from MSRP after a year and 760 miles: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2024-ineos-grenadier-37/

Bud, if at age 59 you are in your final years, I'm age 72 and must be way down that road with my 2024 4Runner! Age is a state of mind. "The Older I get, the better I was!"

They are good engines. The peripherals and cooling system are complicated and compact. I would drive a high mileage one across the US no worries. I would not rip a 50k mile down washboard roads 30+ miles off a roadway. The plastic cooling system will come apart and you aren't doing a trailside repair.

Back in the 80s one of my uncles had a land rover like this...that in my mind was a tank and uncomfortable as anything. This grenadier thing just looks like a shoe box to me and gives me the 80s flashback.

^The styling was intentional. As the story goes, the head of Ineos wanted to buy the tooling and license-build the old Defender 110, but JLR told him to pound sand, so he got creative. End result was a more capable vehicle. The original Defender was never available with factory lockers, for example.

I haven’t heard that one. But when I was much younger I learned that when an old guy is regaling you with tales of the glory days, and you’ve heard them before, the generous thing to do is react as though your hearing them for the first time. I’ve paid my dues in that respect and now that I’m the old guy I demand that same courtesy.

I'd buy the nicest old '91-down K2500 Suburban before I bought a Grenadier. It would get a Dana 60/14-bolt with Truetracs and a 454.

While not 72, (I am 21 years younger), I can share the same sentiment. As soon as I heard the 6th gen would be the 4cyl turbo, I got serious about getting rid of my 4th gen and trading up to a ‘23 TRD ORP. At the time, they were hard to locate here in Colorado and I didn’t want to pay above MSRP for a Pro. So the waiting game commenced for about two months. Picked it up in June 2023, and immediately began swapping things out. While I completed a lot of projects, some were left on the cutting room floor.

Now we are relocating to Chicago, where I won’t be in the wilderness nearly as much. It’s bittersweet to leave despite seeing the changes over the last 27 years but we are keeping the house so there is always a chance to return.
