Replaced off-road silver valances with black. Stock suspension w/ 33's. Yes I had to trim my bumper and fender liners. Prinsu roof rack.
I have a 2022 4runner 5th gen. I swapped wheels and tires with a buddy that was trading in his 5th gen and had some nice 33's with about 50% life still left in them and my tires needed to be replaced. My TPMS is now not linked to these new tires and needs resetting. I found a video of a guy showing how to reset it, but he states to "fill your tires to the proper pressure then reset the monitors". My question is, is the tires being at proper pressure really a necessity? Can I reset the link now to get them working and then when I take my 4Runner in for service in about 300 miles they won't charge me for the reset and will maybe top off my tires for free, or do I need to fill them to the proper pressure before resetting? I would have to either go to somewhere less expensive like Costco to fill them with nitrogen, or fill them with compressed air myself to reset and then have the nitrogen redone, which I feel like will be more expensive overall. Long story short, I am just trying to get the TPMS reset and tired topped off with nitrogen in the most inexpensive way possible.

No, you don't have to have the tire pressure set to the proper PSI. It won't hurt to do that, but it'll still register whatever the PSI is. Nitrogen? Dude, just go to the local gas station and pay $2 to use the air/vac machine to air up your tires. It'll run long enough to fill up all four tires to 34PSI.

I have an air compressor and air hose reel at home, the problem isn't filling up. Nitrogen just helps in my area because our temps fluctuate non-stop. I live in Reno NV so this time of year it gets to 90 in the day and 40 at night. The nitro helps me not have to fill up my tires constantly. Filling them up with compressed air just dilutes it is all. But thank you for the resetting info! I will just reset them and then when I take it in for service, the dealership will likely just top me off with nitro anyway. Thanks again! :)

Wouldn’t merely topping off be futile? Wouldn’t the dealer have to let all the air out of the tires and then refill with nitrogen?

BTW this is the first time I’ve heard this reason used as an excuse to use nitrogen. Don’t do it myself.

Look in your owner's manual! I also have a 2022 and followed the instructions in the manual to "Register" and then "Initialize" new TPMS sensors when I got another set of wheels with new sensors and it worked well.

So the dealership out here automatically sells every vehicle with Nitrogen and refills with nitrogen due to the high desert mountain geography/weather out here. So my tires already have nitrogen in them now, I just thought I would have to have them at the correct PSI to reset, which would force me to put normal air in them. So if I can reset without adjusting to proper PSI, then there is no need to worry because the dealership is going to give me nitro anyway. So no, no need for deflating and refilling, its just what they do out here.

What pressure do you use “Set pressure in each tire to set alarm pressure.”

I never fill my tires with pure nitrogen or air (which is like 78% nitrogen). Instead, I fill my tires with the hot air expelled from the mouths of 4Runner owners who cry that their Raptor lights are causing problems for them.

    That supply is NEVER ENDING.

Interesting. So off-roaders who air down are out of luck, or have to make a trip to the dealer after every outing? Asking sincerely, though I will confess to being skeptical about the nitrogen thing.

I heard that’s where Power Tank gets their CO2.

Well that wouldn't make sense for them as they are airing down every outing and airing back up after off-roading. I'm not doing that. If you are constantly airing down then theirs really no point. I drive mine to and from work, camping in the summer, and snowy mountains for snowboarding in the winter. I have zero use for airing down, so I'd rather not have to fill my tires at all as the year goes on. I'm not saying you HAVE to have nitro in your tires, that's just what is in mine, so why not keep it consistent. Lol I really didn't mean for this to be a "what air is best" battle, was just trying to figure out if resetting an a lower PSI I am at now would be fine or not. You all can do whatever you want with your rigs lol. Fill your tires with whipped cream for all I care! :)

The great thing about this model of 4R is that it allows YOU to pick the pressure that will set off the alarm. Me, I'm aired down - I drive a lot of dirt roads so I set my 4R to not set off the TPMS alarm unless the pressure drops below 25 psi. If your normal pressure is ~ 34 psi then I'd set the TPMS system to alarm at 28 psi. It's up to you.

That "dealership" has got the best scam ever going. They earned the moniker of "stealership". But what's worse is people are buying their bullshit.

It literally doesn't cost the customer anything additional. I used to sell cars at this same dealership years ago, there's no charge for it. Seems like you may have gotten ripped off in the past. Sorry to hear.
I truly think they started doing it because they probably got tired of people bringing their cars in when the tire pressure light would come on, when all it was was the cold air making their tire PSI lower.
It's funny how upset everyone is getting over air in their tires.
