    Procomp 6" lift
Hey guy's I'm new here and to all of this so please be kind because I'm kinda dumb. About 2 years ago I came home from being off shore and my wife had gotten a new to her (used) 2020 4runner sr5 premium its a very good looking ride. She bought it with a 6" procomp lift that the previous owner had installed. Well its been riding like absolute ass so was trying to have shocks struts upper and lower control arms. Well come to find out procomp no longer makes anything 6" for the 4runner any longer. So we bought some rough county (because they were pretty much all i could find) front and rear shocks. The front fit great with absolutely no issues replacing them. The rear on the other hand we thought they sent us wrong part the Oring opening (if that makes sense) was way to large leaving way to much play not sitting snug in the slightest. So I guess my question is does anyone know where I might be able to get the rear that will fit? Any help is greatly appreciated

My advice is redo the suspension and don’t go anymore than 3”. 6” is going to ride like ass no matter what.

Well I know its going to ride like ass because of the lift.. what i was referring to was the back shocks had no spring whatsoever and it would rattle a lot. We have the rattle taken care of but the back shocks definitely need replacing. I would love to go down to a 3 but unfortunately at the time the funds do not allow it.

Dobinson makes long travel shocks that might work for a 6" lift. Also jba has uca for 4" + lifts

You can try calling Rough Country and asking them to send you replacement bushings for their 2"-3" lift shocks. You can then swap out the bushings from your 6" lift shocks.

6" lift cuts out the frame crossmember for the LCAs. To "redo" means finding a 4Runner at a salvage yard, cutting out its crossmember, and welding back to his frame.

^OP can't even figure out shock bushings, and you want him cut out a frame crossmember from the salvage yard and weld it in his rig?

Welcome from Wisconsin! Get rid of the 6" lift.. it probably is cool looking but the troubles you're going through are not worth the head aches. Is this vehicle a daily driver? Parts are soooo available for say a 3" lift and there are some really cool 4Runners on the forum with 3" lift, have a look see. Good luck with your project whichever way you go. Like Hossler said JBA has the upper control arms for big lift kits.

    Don't do a 6" lift man. Not on a T4r.

@OP, I know you said several times you bought the 4R this way, but the long term reliability of other components in your unit will be compromised by this lift. If you can and able dial this down a bit or even consider returning this to stock. Good luck.

It’s been mentioned that this lift is basically a permanent alteration due to frame structure that’s been cut out to weld and fit the new crossmembers/brackets for the lower control arms. That new bracket/crossmember repositions the LCA pivot mounts a few inches and is basically what allows you that amount of lift. This, along with a different spindle is what lets you lift it that much while keeping good angles on the front CV axles. But these lifts can cause the driveshaft angles to be at their limits, and the pinion angles might mean issues at the diffs eventually. But I guess it depends on the kit and if the installer did anything to address the driveshaft angles.

But I suppose it’s possible to dial it down an inch or two based in the LCA droop angle in the pictures. If the front coilovers have adjustable seat height it might not require any new parts to lower it. The rears would need different coils (or shorter spacers if that’s what the lift kit used).

@Ajgarvis regarding the o-rings you mentioned on the rear shocks, are you talking about the rubber bushings that slide over the shock shaft? If so, you could measure the shaft diameter and see who sells shocks with the same diameter and just order the bushings from them. But if you’re talking about the lower shock mount hole, then you would need new shocks with the correct size to fit the lower mount.

Just out of curiosity, it would be nice to see pics of where the rear and front driveshaft meet the diffs and each side of the transfer case. I’m curious what the angles look like.

Ok here are some pictures I am not sure if this is what you wanted (I have no idea about any of this BTW) this 6in lift is not what I would have wanted on this but my wife bought it pays for it and loves it. Unfortunately she nor I know nothing about it. Yes I know thats very stupid and irresponsible to purchase something with absolutely no knowledge but what can I say.

That’s the shock lower mount eye. I’m not sure how much allowable slop it should have on the mounting tube on the axle. But it shouldn’t be much.

Also, the bolt that holds them on has is shouldered and I think that bolt should grip on the metal tube within the bushing of the shock. If it’s properly torqued, and the eye is the correct depth (front to back) it might be enough to hold them still.

But they might be the wrong shock, if so you might need to return them, otherwise it might damage the mounting tube on the axle.

Again I know nothing about this so just going off of what two suspension shops have said. The rough county won't work due to the diameter of the mount eye. We have called rough county and they say this is the right one. For shits and giggles one shop tried out the tacoma 6" for the 4runner and the eye was to small and would need to be drilled out which he highly does not recommend. Im going to call procomp on Monday and see if they have any suggestions.

If you decide to consider something like a long travel shock, you have to consider they allow the back end to droop much further than stock. Long travel shocks can’t be just bolted on unless you you make sure other things will tolerate the additional droop that the shocks will allow, like fitting extended brake lines, extended bump stops, possibly removing the rear sway bar, and using longer coils (so they don’t fall out when the axle is fully extended). There might be other things you needed that I don’t know about (I don’t have long travel).

Maybe the procomp lift you have installed already allows for long travel shocks?… but I would double check it before putting on LT shocks.

Maybe you can ask procomp what came in their kit for the rear suspension, and ask if it makes the rear end “long travel safe”. If so, ask what it is their kit replaced in the back, then verify yourself that those are installed. Also, ask what the procomp shock’s extended length and compressed length were. You can then compare those specs to the long travel shocks that are available on the market. The dobinson site, for example lists out these lengths.

Very good suggestions I will definitely ask procomp when I call. Hopefully they can at least point me in the right direction.
