I noticed immediately after buying my 13 that there was goo of some kind on the front windows when putting them up and down. I cleaned them thoroughly and had them tinted.
They still did it so I removed the panels and cleaned the inner seals with Dawn in the sink.
I assumed the goo was tree sap of some kind but I now believe it’s the adhesive used for the felt on the seal that has now failed. I physically cut the rubber down below the felt line and now have no issues.
Next was the rear outer seal. It was curled up at the bottom of the hatch completely dry rotted.

If you want to see deteriorating rubber, seals and mounts, look at a Honda.

I worked for a major Toyota supplier for a long time and I remember several changes we made around 2005 to make the metal treatment more “environmentally friendly” but more rusty as well. I had suspected that the rubbers were also being affected because of similar changes. My 2018 Subaru had serious deterioration of chassis rubber after only two years. I’ve seen plenty of Hondas with windshield moulding missing so yeah, it’s a Japan thing.
