I think it has to do with how propane flame propagates forming a pressure front away from the source.

I’m not sure how much propane it would take, but I bet one of the little overlandy type LP tanks holds more than enough propane to make a closed-up vehicle “pop” like that. If you think about it, the amount of propane wasn’t even enough to burn much of anything.

Even videos of houses blowing up due to leaking natural gas building up inside…it’s usually an extremely loud bang, with hardly any flame visible. Maybe the people inside can survive maybe because they are in the middle of it (pressure spike is even around the body), and the heat is gone in an instant. No fire because the fuel is either consumed in the flash, or expelled to the outside in the explosion.

Ironically, anybody walking next to that 4runner when it exploded would have met a very quick end.

It’s very rare the actual pressure tank would explode, even on the cheap disposable tanks used for plumbing torches are very strong.

What happened here is that the propane leaked out of the tank, filled the inside of the cabin, mixed with the oxygen, and exploded when the guy lit up a cigarette. Pressure tanks don’t ecer explode, but leaks are not rare. In fact, I use a small disposable tank and a weed burner to light up my BBQ grill. I usually left my weedburner attached to the tank. I left it outside once overnight and went back the next day to put it away. What was a full tank, was now completely empty. It either leaked out of the valve on the weed burner, or around the cork gasket on the threaded part of the weed burner. If that was inside a vehicle and leaked like that, it would have been enough to blow up the vehicle if there was an ignition source.

I think the lesson here is to not leave anything attached to the tank, as that’s the most likely source of a leak. I don’t really trust the valves on the small cheap tanks either, so even if they don’t have anything attached, it’s probably best to not leave them in the vehicle. Or at least do a good sniff test around the valve before storing it.

Merged the two threads. Has it been determined if it was propane or meth or something else?

It sounded like it may have been a leaky propane tank.
