    I don't experience any knocking. I must however run 93 as my engine is supercharged.

    Be aware of placebo affect and marketing. Your engine's ECU doesn't "learn." Your engine's ECU doesn't have an octane sensor. It can detect knock which is horrendously bad. Your ECU will attempt to protect the engine by reducing the timing through knock retard. This is a defensive mechanism and not a learning mechanism. Your ECU will not invert this strategy and try to advance timing if it detects no knock. Cars with high compression ratios, forced air, and tuned cars need the higher octane to control the detonation due to the increased heat.

    Regular 87. I look for Top Tier brand stations when I have the choice. Same thing Ive done with every vehicle Ive ever owned, with the exception of the Acura that required premium (it had 11:1 compression, 200hp from 2L).

    In CO we can run 85, but there have been times I'm in other states that don't have 85. So I run 87 in the 4runner and taco because of that

    There is zero benefit to running 91 in your Runner, unless you are purposely wanting to waste money.

    Lots of people believe running 91 or better is good for the newest six banger turbo charged Toyota Tundra, especially for towing. Seems likely that will apply to the 6th Gen Runner. Paying the extra price for premium gas in a truck sucks a donkey.

    We can’t get ethanol-free gas here in San Diego so I thought I’d try it. Cost .75 cents a gallon less than San Diego’s 10% ethanol premium. It’s only sold as 91 premium at the pump. They also sell AV gas at 104 octane and VP Racing Fuel at 108 octane. Lots of “Rump de Dump” big V8 jet boats pull in for their high octane fix. Me, just pulled in to give it a try, didn’t seem to make a difference in power, I was however towing 2-jet skiis and gear.

    Sorry I didn’t read through the posts…but the way that I understand it is that it’s a total myth that higher octane “Runs Cleaner” or is “Better”, a marketing myth to push for more profit. You are actually doing your vehicle a disservice if it’s “Not Designed” for higher octane. And 4Runner are not. They combust differently. You put higher octane into vehicles that were actually designed for it.

    Let’s keep it going and destroy another myth now…

    Weird, my mother's mustang says minimum 87 octane but for best performance to run 93 octane. My F150 with the 5.0 was the same and got better mpg on 91 than on 87.

    Dyno tests with the 5th gen have shown more power on 93 than on 87.

    Believe what you want.

    FWIW, I run 87 because the gains from 91 are not enough to justify the additional cost.

    Too many mods and too much money
    Dual VVTi can advance or retard timing to accommodate hot intake air temps, heavy load, and 87 octane. So under load if no detonation is detected, the engine will advance timing. How much extra power this produces will not be a significant amount in most situations.
    I learned there are certain situations where higher octane is helpful. Truck was a heavy 5800 lbs (armor, camping gear and tools) one 93 degree summer day going up a steep grade to Ashville, NC. It was knocking itself to pieces keeping a 60 mph pace. Had to drop down below 50 mph.
    2 summers later, same temp and weight on the same grade w 93 octane, the truck was able to keep a 60 to 65 mph pace without detonation.
    For 95% of 5th gen owners, 87 is fine. But, 93 has its benefits, not worth the money spent in most cases, but our engine's have a comp ratio of 10.4:1 and are designed to run on 87 or 93 and it will not hurt the 1gr one little bit to run 93.

    I'm not sure to what extent, but I am pretty sure they do.

    I learned this when I changed the timing belt on my '03. Afterward, it would not idle. It would start, and instantly stall. After some googling, it seemed that reason was that the ECU had been compensating for carbon build-up in the throttle body. Disconnecting the battery for a prolonged period of time causes it to return to factory settings. I took the intake hose off, cleaned out the throttle body, and it solved the problem.

    This is just based on what I read, and personal experience, so there's a possibility I'm off here. But, I can't really think of any other logical explanation for what happened. I'd like to know if anyone has a better idea.

    91 because the single VVT-i was known for knocking at high load/low RPM. I don't run it for power that's not there and all gas has state and federal mandated detergents.

    87 Octane from a decent gas station. (Chevron/ Shell/ Exxon/ etc.)

    The additive package/ age/ and overall quality of fuel has more effect than the octane rating for a unmodified 1GR-FE. Routinely using a quality fuel system cleaner can be helpful for longevity as well.

    As far as performance goes this engine (in stock configuration) will see no benefit from running higher octane fuel.

    Used 87 at Shell all along. I recently tried 89 at shell. I am on my third tank fill since 89 and my mileage has improved from 18.5 I usually got during my mix driving to about 19.6 now.
    No other change , same route, same driving habits.
    If I drive around 60mph on highways I am pushing 20.5+ mpg. On 87 it would be under 19.5mpg
    I am going to use it for a few months. It's about $3.9/gallon compared to$3.4 for normal.

    I tried Sonoco 94 and didn’t notice anything. Smoother engine but definitely not worth the $1 extra per gallon. A TRD sticker probably adds more HP than the 94 octane gas.

    First tank was regular unleaded and plan to stick to it as I see no benefit using premium gas for this vehicle.
