Hey ya’ll I need some help.

my left passenger door decided to say “shop is closed”. I can’t open the door from the inside and outside and makes a weird burst shot sound.

my wife literally had to crawl out through the front.

Thank you for the clarification, that sucks. Since you’re rig is brand new, I take it in. One thing to be aware of though is that there are small child safety levers inside the door that disable the inside latch. So small children can’t accidentally open the door.
Since you said that you can’t open from the outside, then this probably isn’t the problem.
One time when I was washing my car, I accidentally switched the lever down to the child safety position, then the door wouldn’t open from the inside.

Also possibly the door lock actuator is stuck in the lock position.

Any way I can get the door open? I may be able to access the door panel but I just don’t know what I am looking for.

No idea, without pulling the door panel which isn’t an option with the door closed.

If I were able to pop the inside panel of the door open… what would be needed to press or pull on to just get the door to be open?

If taking it in to the dealership is not an option, then I would spend some time on YouTube and try and locate a video that covers pulling the door panel off of a 5th gen.

There are probably others on this forum that have experience doing this.

Update: With prayer and determination to not settle in dealing with the hassle with the dealer. I took matters into my own hands and saw that both wires in the actuator was out of place.

Took off door panel, took the actuator out, saw the green and blue cable popped out of place, snapped cables back to it's place, and put everything back.

Took me 30 mins and save me a headache going back and forth with a dealer trying to figure out if it's under warranty or not and saved me $225 just for labor and $400-500 in parts.

The mysterious thing is... Yesterday it was closed shut that I could not open the door from outside or inside. But I walked up to my car this morning hit unlock and miraculously it opened.

Right when it opened I made a gut wrenching decision and tried to fix it myself and thankfully... It was in my favor.

Nice job! So the door opened up miraculously where it didn't just the day before, even before you fixed the cable connections? Wow.

In all honesty… yes. idk how but I’m glad it did or else I would have to take out the panel out somehow.

Sometimes those things just happen. One week into my new 4R ownership, halfway between home and my destination, in the middle of nowhere, a mouse-chewed ignition wire decided to show itself. Truck ran crappy, dash lights lit up, and I pulled over and shut down the engine. After waiting a bit, I decided to try starting it. Started right up, ran fine, lights all went off. I chose to continue to my destination, where I found a Toyota dealership and a technician who was willing to stay over to fix my ignition wire. That took care of the issue. To this day, I cannot explain why the chewed wire started working again, and worked long enough for me to reach that dealer, but man I'm glad it did...

    Wow, great job!

That looks like quite a door latch. So the blue cable is the lock? The factory must not have secured the plastic cover on.

Was the door panel removal difficult?

The blue cable is the lock and the green is child lock.

Yea the factory didn’t do a good job. ‍♂️

and not at all took me 30 mins for the entire job.

Again, great job. I admire your determination.

I can’t help but wonder if Toyota quality has slipped a few notches since the pandemic. I haven’t been keeping score but there seems to be more posts with minor issues on 21-22’ models compared to 20’ and prior years.

Not sure but 21 4Runners were made before the pandemic so maybe it might be the last batch of good ones?

Maybe it wasn’t the pandemic. My Dad used to joke that you don’t want a car that was built on a Friday or a Monday. On Friday the workers have their minds on the weekend, and on Monday they’re hung over.

Yeah so I'm in a pickle here..

I think I goofed on the csbles.. how did you get to your actuator without the door opening??

I've closed my door and it won't open lmao ... ooooweeeee

Edit: yup I goofed the cables but less than a minute after stopping and breathing I manually pulled on the door's unlock and that opened the door... time to take off the panel again.. I definitely saved some peace and mind by moving onto something else and thinking about it.. and also coming upon this thread!!

OP had said In post #10 that just before working on the actuator, the door had mysteriously decided to open.

    Doesn't need any
If only one side of the rear doors was malfunctioning, why the need to crawl out through the front?
