California Trying to Pass Bill on Speed Limiters

Imagine your 4Runner honking itself (at you), every time you exceed speed limit by a certain %.

They want to start IDing speed limits on roads into a database, so your car would automatically know the speed limit of the road you're traveling on. Then you're connected vehicle will 'assist' you in maintaining the proper speed limit by annoying the fuck out of you. Lmao

    ----

The California Senate just passed SB 961, which would require half of all new cars built or sold in the state to include passive speed limiters by 2029, and by 2032, that figure will rise to 100 percent. If it passes the Assembly and is signed into law, the new regulation will apply to all passenger vehicles, including trucks, as well as buses.

According to the bill, the “passive intelligent speed assistance system” that would be required would be “[an] integrated vehicle system that uses, at minimum, the GPS location of the vehicle compared with a database of posted speed limits, to determine the speed limit, and utilizes a brief, one-time visual and audio signal to alert the driver each time they exceed the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour.” It would also default to the higher speed limit if, for whatever reason, there are multiple speed limits in the area you’re driving.

I don’t agree with it but I blame the clowns on the road that constantly have to speed 90+ in a 65 to get back to snorting copium. It’s usually a dumpy Hyundai/Kia, Accord (I think I bought a Vette) turdo, any V8 RWD, Euro junk or Altima.

    Ugh.

Hopefully the California highway patrol union will vote it down when they realize it will hurt speed ticket revenue ;)

Coming soon to California....to control air pollution, a law limiting the number of breaths you can take per minute.

A cheap band-aid over an infrastructure and people problem but I get it, maybe a tell-tale will help Jon Appliance-Driver be more mindful.

I know people and government can walk and chew gum at the same time but why's it gotta be these PR messes rather than a genuine win like - IMO - mandating lights and high beams defaulting to automatic mode or a public awareness campaign at least since the feds seem to be sleeping on proper lighting regulation and a good 5%, sometimes more, vehicles I encounter on a given night trip have their high beams on.

It won't be helpful for years where I think it counts though - by the time it trickles down to the fourth-owner of a 2029 Rogue it'll be lost among all the other dash lights.

Edit: Forgot to say 5%, not just 5

Be careful of what you ask for.

“In fact, more than $105 billion in the 2017-18 state budget comes from the federal government.

    ….

a substantial share of total net federal tax revenues comes from California — more than $378 billion in federal fiscal year 2016.”

    https://calbudgetcenter.org/resources/california-federal-dollars-two-way-street/

Imagine if CA kept all of its tax dollars. We could finally build that wall and keep out all the zonies.

The CA jealousy circle jerk may continue on.

I'd be fine with Calif. keeping their money if they would agree to keep their insane politics and regulations to themselves.

Shocker. A thread about California politics looking like it's headed towards lockdown. Who would have guessed?

I don't really agree with that method. But, at least that would make the EV's pay their fair share.

    California Economy Dropping in Rankings

“California’s economy could fall from the fifth largest in the world to sixth place. The state’s GDP growth was 32nd in the nation last year.

The Sacramento Bee says after a 2022 prediction that it would pass Germany for the fourth largest economy in the world, the California Business Roundtable is now projecting the state will drop below India for the world’s sixth largest economy later this year.

California has seen a drop in revenue the last two years, and has the highest unemployment rate in the country.”

Peaks and valleys my friend. Economics 101.

….and you’re comparing a country to a state like it’s an argument in your favor.

This forum is supposed to be to learn and help others with their 4Runner. I’ve learned a lot around here regarding 4Runners in the last 6 years and now I’m trying to help others with what I have learned but it might be time to move on and let this place devolve into this constant politicking. Maybe you all are just bored because your state has nothing to do.

Honestly, I’m happy people hate on CA. We don’t need anymore people.

Not politics, just economics and life environment. I just quoted a California news source, I didn’t write it.

After pocketing nearly $1/2 million after buying(cash) our new custom home on acreage for $550k 8yrs ago it has almost tripled in assessed value to well over $1.5M. I think we did alright…..
Nearly all my neighbors are ex California professionals that joined us in the exodus. Californians are buying up everything in sight driving values up. Heck, even Newsom bought 15ac in Smith Valley….what does that tell you? We are just 12 miles(from Tahoe) over the NV/CA border enjoying no income tax, no gridlock, no graffiti……etc.
I was just in the Santa Cruz mountains this past weekend helping an old friend designing his cabin. Kali is home to the most dangerous drivers on the west coast. After residing nearly 40yrs in the SF Bay Area all I could think was getting the heck out of there Sunday night.

I've always said if they wanted to control speeding all's they would have to do is program the car to not go over the posted speed limit (speed limiter)... But yes... Then Law Enforcements would loose a lot of revenue... So we know that aint gonna happen...

Oh, you’re in the Reno area. I’ll admit that was a solid move. I know of a couple people who did the same thing. They’re still working CA jobs. What percent of your neighbors still work a CA job. You can thank Covid and remote working for those property value spikes. Not exactly leaving CA behind. I know you now this…

I have friends in Texas who also can’t stop thinking about CA and now they are complaining about property tax spikes there because of the “exodus”.

And finding a California news source doesn’t mean much. California has more republicans than any other state. A fact people tend to avoid mentioning when discussing politics.

Please convince more people to move. I would like to buy a second home in mammoth, so it would be helpful if property values dipped, but that’s unlikely.

Im out on this convo. I know I’m not convincing any one of anything. I’m in Indianapolis for the weekend watching the 500 and getting my reminder that the Midwest is not for me even though we could buy a McMansion with acreage for cash with the equity we have on our house.

One last reminder: California sucks and you shouldn’t move here or visit. Thanks!

Not Reno, Carson Valley….much nicer….shhhh, we back up to the Pinenut Mountains. I have a zillion acres of BLM in my backyard to play on with our 2nd gen Goldie, 2 ATVs and SxS and don’t have to trailer them anywhere. The 2022 will have very little exposure to off road as long as Goldie in in the stable. We have a 5 car garage, 45’RV bay and 1K sqft workshop and by far the smallest house in the neighborhood @2,800sqft. Everyone here that we know is either retired or runs their business from home. One of my best friends owns a SF ironworks and all he does is play like I do.
    Love it here.
The view from the top of Mount Siegel @9,500’, real fun ~20 mile trail up there. Sierras in the far background.

I vote for donating to the bottom of the Marianas trench, and I live in California (for now). I don't want the land - in other words the physical land mass of California to be tossed to the bottom of the sea. But there are a great many people and politicians that richly deserve it. California is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, but at the same time it can be the ugliest. It is so sad.

I’m not sure if this will eventually get locked, but back to the original discussion, steps car makers or governments could take to make our streets and roads safer. I’ve always felt that every car should be equipped with a breathalyzer. Now I’m fully aware that those the court mandated for folks arrested for DWI are expensive and don’t work properly much of the time. But if a manufacturer can make power brakes work almost 100% of the time, I’d be willing to bet they could do a breathalyzer too. Imagine how many drunk drivers that would take off the roads. Of course, in Texas at least, it would also put millions of law enforcement officers, lawyers, court personnel including judges, and no telling who else, out of work. DWI is big business here and there’s nothing like money to prevent sensible legislation.
