6th Gen Fail - Hybrid for Overlanding

Visited the Grand Canyon last summer, plenty of folks including us had setups involving sleeping in a vehicle. Whether it's the number 1, 2, 3, etc. way to sleep in the great outdoors (or as a friend asked, the great four doors).

Driving Sports TV wouldn't be giving us the "can I sleep in it?" as part of a review if nobody cared about that metric.

 

I do. If I didn't, I wouldn't be in a 4Runner.

True offroaders buy this. We should be thankful to Jeep that it is still making these lil things despite very little demand
The rest of us buy a practical vehicle that can do some offroading, a vehicle that is a jack of all trades like the 4Runner.

 

I go 4Runner camping, can’t carry enough stuff in a sedan.

 

I camp with my 4Runner a lot.

Put tent in back.
Take tent out and setup on ground.
Sleep in tent.

Plenty of mall crawler Jeeps out there. And, there's plenty of "true off-roaders" running around in Toyotas modified for their needs.

 

did that a lot with my taco, but decided tent on top of the runner is easier than setting up my tent and then cots. I guess I could say, I camp on my runner now.

But with out the jeeps, plastic ducky sales would be down.

 

I feel like, on this forum, there are far less folks who Offroad or “overland” or car camp in their 4R’s than there are on the FB groups.

I saw this comical but accurate piece online a while back clarifying the differences between Offroad and overland.

Winners are determined by the distance traveled through the pit. This activity, most notably in the southeastern USA, is usually frequented by overcompensating men in excessively lifted full-size diesel trucks accompanied by 3 or 4 trailer park meth-head females in WalMart clearance rack beer branded bikini tops and cutoff shorts. You are likely to catch an STD at one of these events.

A mall crawler is any truck or suv that's hella lifted, large diameter deep dish wheels, low profile mud terrains, FloGrown rear window decal, and in some cases high quality suspension, however, it’s usually Rough Country as noted by the giant rough country windshield banner. But the difference is not a spec of dirt can be found on it showing that it's not actually used for off road. These trucks are usually found grouped together in a Denny’s parking lot on Saturday nights with the owners standing around vaping and using the word “bro” way too much. The owners of these vehicles are mostly distinguished by their tank tops, white framed Oakleys, and flat bill hats.”

That's fair... and I agree that for guys who sleep in the truck the new floor is not ideal... Ive just never slept in it, my camping is more primitive and most of it is done with my son and his boy scout troop. We typically use it to get to the trailhead, or occasionally on base camp trips I get the duty to haul the gear trailer.





I think Tridents definitions above are excellent. I would not refer to myself as either a true overlander or serious offroader. I am an all around recreational driver that is dabbling into amateur off road.

 

I camp out of mine I used to tent camp but no 4 season tent is truly weatherproof in the harshest of weather plus mine stays in camp mode year round since I don’t have kids, way easier than setting up and tearing down a tent and less gear to carry

I'm constantly impressed by the Tacos, and my 4Runner. I'd have thought that with better suspension and a shorter wheelbase, the 4Runner would outperform the Tacomas, but it's really hit and miss. I suppose my lack of experience is a factor, as well.

Of course, at some point, a Wrangler is going to outperform anything with IFS. But, I don't know if my skill, or will to push it will ever necessitate such capability.

A lot of the places we go serve as ATV/UTV and/or dirt bike trails as well. It's not uncommon for us to end up with spectators who can't believe we would do the things we do with our dailies.

I generally don't attempt anything if I think there's too much risk of damage. But, I also know that, sometimes, shit happens. And, that's why my exhaust is bent, my front bumper cover is fucked up, my rear bumper valance is removed, and I only have one rear mud flap. But, it's been a lot of fun!

You should know as well as anyone here that these things can wheel beyond most people's skill level.

Sometimes it appears that you're only here to troll more than anything. Maybe go hang out on a Jeep forum if you just want to talk out of your ass.

 

I have my GX Overtrail coming, and I am buying a TJ very soon. My TJ will have 37 inch Super Swampers and the GX will be pulling the heavy lil thing to places. The GX will be stock except it will have Load E KO2s. And the TJ will do some crazy offroading.

IFS when thrown $$$ at it, can do as good as solid axle offroad. But IFS just can't be as robust and simple

 

I wish I had the disposable cash and balls to push this thing to its limits.

Not many motels i can open the front door and be on the lake all or almost by myself. Camping is not just about sleeping, at least for me, it’s a out “being closer” to nature.
