How to keep them Critters out from under the hood!

I haven't had the problem but a few off-roading friends have had issues with mice eating wires under the hood. I had a conversation with my neighbor, a retired Army Sargent in charge of Motor Pool field ops, gave me a tip that I wanted to share regarding how to prevent Critters from getting under the hood, especially during winter. Purchase "Peppermint Oil", dilute it w/water in a spray bottle and spray it under the hood around the engine bay and under the engine.

So safe to just spray directly on the top and bottom of engine bay it looks like?
I gotta get on this cuz I have to keep trash cans in my garage.
I should up the number of mouse traps too. And you think keeping lights on helps to keep less mice around?

 

honestly I'm not sure. But I think they might prefer dark vs some light. I could be wrong.

They prefer the lights down low and some quiet classical music...

 

We tried that mint rodent repellent spray. No more trace since then

 

Once a month, I spray this on all the wiring bundles in my Tacoma's engine compartment, especially the area under the intake manifold:

Those of you using the repellent sprays, where exactly under the hood are you spraying?

Or a better question, where should you NOT spray? Ie. is there any concern about screwing something electrical up?
