Add a camera for back of trailer

I'm picking up a 2021 4Runner TRD Off Road in the next cpl days. Gonna use it occasionally to tow my light travel trailer. Want to add a camera to back of trailer that can communicate with the 4runner's dash screen if possible. I already have two cameras temporarily mounted to the rear of my existing 2000 4runner and trailer that I use wirelessly with an add on screen monitor that I have yet to mount on that old 4runner. Cameras and screen are a cheap but high quality resolution Yakry brand. I'd like to not have to use the add-on screen that I'd have to mount to the dash so wondering: Do you guys know of a solution? I guess I want my cake and eat it too, even want to add a front bumper camera due to impossibility to see over hood at crests of hills, so I guess I want to be able to monitor front bumper, back bumper (for hooking up trailer) and back of trailer for watching while towing. Am I expecting too much...? Anybody have a solution? Thank you in advance for your help.

 

Not questioning ones ability to drive but why do you need one behind the trailer?

 

So you can actively see directly behind it and blind spots. It makes it safer when changing lanes and such.

Yes Borracho Loco, my reasons exactly. What you're showing is exactly what I have so I guess I'm looking at using my 2 existing wireless cameras from my old setup, one I'll mount somewhere on front bumper and one on back of trailer and have to use that Yakry monitor when trailering or wanting to see over the hood.... And use 4runner's in-dash system with rear camera already in the 21 4runner. 2 screens for 3 cameras...

I'd like a better solution if possible without mounting this Yakry screen if possible. Any other ideas out there...?

 

I joined so I could respond to this... I am looking to do the same thing, put a wired camera on the back of my camper and be able to view it with the regular dash screen. Maybe you guys can expand on my idea.

The key to the solution is I installed the "Anytime backup and front camera kit" and the plan is to install a third camera on the back of the camper. When I'm towing I'll disconnect the front camera and connect the trailer camera. Then I can just push the Anytime button and use the dash screen like a rear view mirror.

The issue I'm running into is how best to run the front camera cable from the engine bay back to the trailer hitch, so I can connect it to the camper. My thought is to feed it into the frame rail underneath, and run all the way back. Hopefully it isn't too long of a run that the camera doesn't communicate well enough.

 

I’m considering the Wolfbox myself but it requires wiring. So getting it from the back of the trailer to the dash would be a pain.

 

What about a battery operated, outdoor wireless wifi camera? They're cheap. Use your phone to view it.
I'm no guru on this stuff but even if you had to add a wifi hub in your vehicle or trailer, that could open up some more uses for that.

 

When I bought my camper I got sold in a $250 wifi camera that used a phone app to view it. It wired into the running lights and had its own wifi signal. It was super laggy and the app was not user friendly or easy to boot up. It couldn't connect if you were driving at any reasonable speed, so it was only good for parking the camper. This is why I am looking the hardwire it.

So Ironstrom, I bought the front camera and kit to view both front and rear on my stock head unit, works great. I already had a Yakry camera for my camper trailer and old 4runner. I didn't find any way to view the Yakry on the head unit. It would take a lot more electronics knowledge that I have... So I'm settling with getting a dashtop multimount from thetacogarage and mount the Yakry monitor on it only when dragging the trailer. I used duct tape and went on a long trip recently and it worked great. I don't advise using duct tape though...

I have a simple 3d printed mount for my tablet when I use my expensive wifi back up camera. It hooks into the air vents and hangs over top of the dash screen.

 

Wireless might be the way to go. I just installed my wolfbox 2 weeks ago - it's great but I'm still not used to the video on my rear view mirror. Yea lots of wiring but if I could do it, anyone can.
