I did a search, but didn't find anything so figured I would the the folks that go to the hills.

We have a cabin in the mountains (offgrid). Every time we go, we end up with critter damage in the engine bay of my pickup. Before we take mama's ride I am supposed to check to see what can be done to keep mice, chipmunks at bay. I have heard of mothballs and dryer sheets, but has to be something else other than sitting up all night with the 9mm.

Around our neighborhood , there are "barn" cats that do a great job of keeping the rodents in check. Also a few folks just keep the hoods of their vehicles open and they don't have any issues with rodents. But people closer to town have to deal with more mice, rats and two legged vermin.
So I would say, if your neighbors are few and far, just open the hood. Most nocturnal rodents don't like open air dining.

I am talking about up in the mountains 5500ft elevation plus. The chipmunks, mice and squirrels are not totally nocturnal. Last summer I had my truck up there and was unloading for a 4-day weekend, had the topper open and tailgate down. Fifteen minutes tops and had two chipmunks in the back looking for either nesting materials or food. The damn things whatever they were, chewed chunks of insulation of my firewall, crawled up through the air filter intake and deposited the fluffy stuff there. It is a problem in the back woods, so why I posted asking for info.

I hear you. My wife and I live at 5300 ft. We have all those animals plus larger ones too. You got me about the firewall insulation, but I did silicone a small piece of window screen on the intake of the air filter.

The firewall insulation is on my 2500 HD Chev. I have already replaced it once. Just want to head off damage to mamas 4rn if I can.

I’ve had the same problem with field mice chewing up my wires in the California desert.

My successful solution for the last two trips was a combo of snap Traps around the tires and on top of each tire (Glue a piece of hard cat food to the trap trigger), tomcat rodent deterrent spray in wheel wells and inside motor and an under the hood ultra sound unit. The three of these items managed to keep my car free of rodents killing two with the traps.

    Hi All,

I have had my 2001 4runner for about a year now... Love it.

I have done some work on it... Brakes, water pump/timing belt and seals.

It has 222000+ miles on it. Runs great. It was well taken care of before me.

I have been having problems with mice in the Vent fan.

I cleaned it out twice (both, engine hood insulation). This last time a Mouse!!

Can someone please direct me to how I can block these nasty critters at the
    firewall/intake.

I even have a trap permanently installed under the hood!

    Any help is Greatly Appreciated.

    Eric

Not sure if 9mm is enough gun for chipmunks; might want to step up to .40 S&W...

    Is plasti-dip a mod?!
Fluid film the underside. They wont like the smell or slippery surface. Plus, underside corrosion protection for a bonus!
