Push To start

I need help with a Push to start system on a 1996 4Runner. Its a Manual transmission. Any advice from anyone that has done the switch, any preferred brand of kit? Thanks in advance.

 

I have to ask - why would you want that?

 

Mainly wanted to see if it can be done. Also maybe a little of convenience not having to worry about locking my keys in. I don't know if it can even be done on a Manual transmission.

No one wants to lock their keys in their vehicle, but I'm sure it's really easy to avoid.

 

I would think you could wire the clutch bypass to the push button start switch. Or just use the clutch pedal.

 

I will continue trying to see if i can find a possible kit. Please if anyone has done it , what's your experience was it wort it ? should i just stop this type of mode all together. Any advice , products and ideas welcome.

 

Never owned a push button start vehicle, but don’t they detect proximity of the key? If so, wouldn’t you have to get keys and sensor and everything? Sounds like a whole lot of money, effort, and potential headaches, for very little gain.

And I’m missing something. How does a push button start fix it if you accidentally leave your keys on the seat?

Useless feature. The main reason cars get stolen - poor security.
I always look for the keys when I get out. Are they in the car ? In my pocket ? Which little cubby in the car ?
Without push to start, they are always in my hand.
The illusion of a premium feature with zero benefits.

 

To actually answer your question, yes it can be done. Jeep guys do it without a ton of difficulty but JKU's and JLU's use a CANBUS system and it may make it easier due to that style of electronic management.

He is talking remote start. He does mention 'smart start' early on, but doesn't address that in the video.

 

Right, but thats my point. They both deal with the issue of installing on a manual transmission. Same failsafe's.
