Transfer specialty license plates?

I have specialty licenses plates on my Tacoma that Ill be trading in when my 4R finally gets here. Does anybody know how I can keep those and transfer them from my Taco to my 4R? I live in California by the way.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago.
When you trade in your Taco, keep your plates. When the DMV sends the standard issue plates in the mail, go to the DMV or AAA (which I did), turn in the new plates and show them your Personalized Plates. They will issue you a new Reg., and month/year tags. Approx. $75.
Oh and make sure to tell them that the 4-Runner is NOT a commercial vehicle. HTH.
