Remind me what kind of pull saws we were using when we were being all Paul Bunyan out there?

The Chicagoland Rover Club would (perhaps still does) have a fall run and a winter run at the Pipeline when I lived there. The wheeling was phenomenal in 20" of snow! I remember one trip we had about 36" of snow over 2 days, and than the temps bottomed out to sub zero. Great times, with dinners at Maiden Lake Supper Club. About the only thing i miss living in IL.

@erfer1 used to live in Illinois has to be tough ( cost of living too ) , thou we do have our own problems especially here in mkecounty. And ya I would want a UNIMOG before trying that 36 inches and 2 day deal :D.

Running in the deep snow wasn't as bad as it sounds. One of our members had a Defender (diesel) with a lift and 33"s, he would make a path. We did have a lot of fun practicing our recovery skills. Airing down, everyone was lifted as well, and good communication made it pretty fun. One of our members had a Series II, fully kitted out, and occasionally we would have a member who had a Chevy 1/2 ton with 5" lift come out and blow a path. This was when McCaslin Mtn. was still open to 4wd vehicles.
I meant to mention as well, if you are a Bacon connoisseur, try Nueske's in Wittenberg, and a lot of stores up there carry it. Their Applewood smoked is out of this world!

What kind of tires would you use in that deep of snow? I know mud tires are good for deep snow, but the drive up and back could be sketchy. Snow tires would probably be good, but most people don't run snows on 4×4's. A 3PMSF AT might be ok, I guess.

I would expect to be getting high centered in that much snow. Was it not an issue? Or, were you on tires big enough clear or float over the snow?

I want to do a T.W.A.T run in January, but have never really gone into un-plowed areas in deep snow. If it's not an issue on the Pipeline, I might consider that instead.

Most of use ran AT's, (siped) aired down to 10-12. Yes, getting high centered was always a problem, yet most of us had run the Pipeline and McCaslin so often we had a good idea of where to go. The rock garden would usually claim a driveshaft or panhard, and we usually travelled with spares, including tie rod ends. We did have a few times when we had to drag a truck to the road for a ride home on a flatbed! The folks who ran MT's would complain about driving up on the highway, yet they usually fared better in the deep stuff.

Fox is good. They're one of the top brands. I have no experience with them, though.

6112 are adjustable for height only. But, different springs are available.

Most shocks that are adjustable are much more expensive.

Did you guys have them siped? Most 3PMSF tires seem to have plenty of siping.

I would probably avoid the more rocky areas if I went. I might stick to more of the other forest roads and just enjoy the scenery.

OTOH, there's an area or 2 that I might have a better shot at with the big water holes frozen over. :D

Just remember that some of the higher end shocks will need to be rebuilt periodically.

Bilsteins will last a few good seasons and then you just replace them.

But, if you want to spend $4K, go for a set of reservoir shocks with adjusters.

Yeah, those are nice. But, they're not adjustable, either. Bilsteins are at least adjustable height, and less than OME.

    some thoughts on the adjustability…

Super high end stuff like Elkas, kings, etc are adjustable for damping characteristics, (compression and/or rebound). Usually with a turn of a dial. Nice, but very expensive. (These are also resevior shocks, which have two more spots, per shock, that can leak)

Other shocks like Dobs IMS or Billsteins might have height adjustability. But it’s not an easy adjustment. For example, mine need to be removed, disassembled, cleaned, and set to a new height.

So unless you like wrenching or really can make 100 percent use to justify expense of resi or adjustable shocks, I would stick to keeping it simple. Shock rebuildability is only ok if you can park your 4runner for the week or two it will take to have them rebuilt.

It’s all good :). Similar configuration to mine. The spacer is to correct for a lean if you have one. I think mine leans a smidge, but I didn’t bother to correct it.

i think I was at around 1800 bucks for shocks and springs. I did not buy upper control arms…which I might end up needing when/if I get bigger tires.

In my case regarding timelines, Crickey Mike under-promised, and overdelivered… but I had to wait a couple of weeks. Not much can be done about the waits, but it seems like he gets regular shipments from Down Under.

Same, I think my front driver side is 1/4 to 1/2 lower. I didnt correct it. I would have if I new about that spacer…then again if Im taking off the shock, I could dial in the correction.

It seems that waiting is the norm for suspension right now. I don't think anyone has anything in stock right now.
