    2021 4Runner TRD PRO
So this year early June, wife and I started to look for a 4Runner Pro. We went to a dealer in Columbia SC and they said, as we all know, it will take a while. We negotiated on MSRP. Meantime, I have searched other dealers and I put a deposit on a Pro with Riverside in Rome GA, which delivered the promise and we got the Pro on August and paid MSRP.

Now, this dealer in Columbia is texting me that they got a Pro and if I am interested. I thanked him, said I am not and offered to advertise for him, thinking they'd ask MRSP, as we previously negotiated. They are adding 5K market adjustment and 2798 "dealer adds", which totals to almost 8K over MSRP. What a bunch of crooks, I am happy I did not wait for them.

Here is the link, for whoever wants to have some fun trolling them...

Oh that’s definitely not the only dealer doing that. I am currently in search of a trd pro and I’m seeing the majority of dealers advertising well over msrp.

Don’t worry, there are probably three people lining up to buy that already.

I saw a used pro the other day online here in California going for $67,988 with 12k miles on it. I thought that was a bit much to be asking for a 4runner

There’s a dealer in Minneapolis with several used pros. I believe all but one high mileage one are priced well above new MSRP.

If you think it's bad NOW. Give it another 6 months. Reality is beginning to set in.

$8k over MSRP is nothing. Some paid more than that before the pandemic.

    Nothing new here.

There was the dealer back in July with a 2021 TRD Pro in Lunar Rock that wanted $15k over msrp.

Then I think back to the poor saps that paid $$$$ over MSRP for a PT Cruiser back in 2000.

Not saying its a bad thing. Your money. I've overpaid for stuff just because as well.

But this isn't new news nor nothing really to bash a dealer about. Someone will pay for it at $8k over thats nothing.

If the dealer won't budge a buyer will. If, they want it. Supply and demand at it's finest hour, in perhaps, my lifetime. I'm not excited about it, but I'm not surprised either.

It is getting harder and harder to get one at MSRP. I luckily secured one in July for MSRP from a small dealer in Nebraska. I picked it up the middle of September and was probably one of the last lunar pro's for 2021.

I would suggest looking out of state. I drove it back 1500 miles to California.

Don't know what you guys would do and whatever you do is none of my business, but I would never pay more than MSRP for any vehicle. The over MSRP market exists because there are people maintaining it. Not blaming anybody, but I one will not support these types of practice. And I will also remember the dealers that do this and never give them business.

    Same.

I don't fault them for selling for that price. If people are willing to buy it, it's silly not to make the money. But I will remember which dealers did that when the market evens out.

From what I've recently read and viewed, it appears this market will be at least the same, if not worse through 2022.

I have two Toyota dealers in my area, they are 15 miles from each other. One was asking me $10,000 over MSRP, and the other was asking just for the MSRP, so guess who got the business!

I can’t tell from the OP whether the dealership was going to renege on the negotiated MSRP, or whether they added a markup after they learned the OP was backing out of the deal. If they were going to renege, shame on them. If not, the market is what it is. For anyone upset by this, if you had to sell your 4R today, would you agree to sell it for Blue Book value, or would you price at the current market?

I paid msrp for mine because in March when I ordered it, supply and demand was different than it is now. According to my salesman, the manager was trying to pressure him into calling me and telling me it was going to be $5000 market adjustment just a few weeks ago. He declined to do that because it was a 6 month wait(or so he claims that's how it went). This dealer NEVER charges over msrp. They are now. With that being said, I see telling someone one thing then changing their mind and changing the agreement as being "crooks or crooked." Thank god that didn't happen to me because I wouldn't have done it. But I don't see anything wrong with dealers changing prices due to current conditions. I run a business and I can tell you that my prices are considerably higher now than they have always been for various reasons. That's just how it goes. There's nothing price gouging or crooked about it. Buy or don't buy. You get to choose. Just my 2
