Tire rotation in the manual

Oh, the best top tier nitrogen that Costco can offer. I’m sure it’s imported!

 

I only buy organic, gluten free nitrogen that is made in the USA!

I recently discovered an alternative that is locally sourced. Unfortunately there are some fillers. It's 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and the rest is a mixture of different organic gases.

 

Nitrogen is a waste of money, imo. Used to run it on my Nissan GTR and the temperature difference was insignificant. Hence the use of Nitrogen isn’t of any benifit.

I’m sure others will have opinions on this matter but I go of facts.

 

What year GTR did you have and do you still have any pics? I would like to see if you did.

Really like that Nissan.

 

Here are some photos. It was basically a track car with 740hp. That’s not much in the GTR world but most don’t use one as track car.

Front to back or do you cross them?

 

The official method is put them all in a bag, shake it up, then disperse to random lug locations until the bag is empty. Page 1122345 of the manual.

 

245/60R20 tires is not the reason for 5 tire rotation on the Limited. Full time 4WD is the reason. Say you have 10K miles on a new Limited and you get a flat tire. Replace the flat with the spare - drive on - and get the flat fixed/replaced when convenient - no problem. However, say you have 65K miles on the Limited, and the tires are near/at the end of their life, you get a flat - replace the flat with the never rotated in spare - and drive on without getting new tires for a while - could be a problem. New tires typically have between 10/32-11/32 tread depth. You need to get new tires when you get down to about 4/32 tread depth, or less - 2/32 is usually about the legal limit. Replacing a tire with a never used spare with 10/32-11/32 tread depth when the other three tires only have 3/32 tread depth means that the spare tire is 7/16"-1/2" larger in diameter than the other three tires. This causes stress in the drive train. If you only drive this way for a short time - probably not a problem - but driving this way for an extended time could be an issue. With FT 4WD I would rotate in the spare as recommended. Yeah, when you replace your tires you have to replace 5 instead of four - but your tires will last ~20% longer if you consistently rotate in the spare - so the cost is mostly a wash. Another benefit is when you get a flat on your second, or third, set of tires and you have a spare that is not a dry rotted piece of shit.

 

What you are describing is an AWD system, not the Torsen...

 

I know the FT 4WD is not AWD and has a Torsen center differential. The FT 4WD/Torsen center diff may tolerate tires of different diameters better than an AWD vehicle - but it could still be an issue - and it is definitely why Toyota provides a matching spare wheel/tire with FT 4WD Limiteds and instructs that the spare be rotated in during normal tire rotations. The Torsen center diff allows different rotational speeds between the front and rear output drive shafts - which allows a difference in rotational speed between the front and rear tires when making turns. However, if you've got one tire with a different diameter - the front or rear diff has to adjust for this also - even when driving straight (meaning all the time) - and if the diameter difference is significant it could cause uneven wear/stress. Same reason why they would suggest replacing both the right and left tire if you have to replace a tire on a set of tires with significant wear on a vehicle with part time 4WD.

 

By the way - I'm not implying that if you had one tire on a FT 4WD Limited that was a different diameter (even like a max. of 7/16"-1/2" different) and you drove that way for a relatively short time before getting new tires that your center, front, or rear differential would be seriously damaged. I'm talking about a situation where someone would drive thousands of miles in a situation like that.
