Anyone know if the foam filter itself is something we can buy?

I’d probably prefer to buy a replacement once in a very blue moon over bolting on a whole ‘nother filter.

Too many to list & Worth every penny!
Not trying to be negative here, but even if you could buy another filter, why?
Replacing the weak item for a replacement weak item. Delete it a put a filter on that can’t be sucked into system, causing more issues.

For some reason a filter replacement isn’t sold by Toyota

Since failure is still so rare, I’m figuring it’d be nice to stick with the existing design.

There’s also the question of whether a metal mesh could effectively solve this worry (or at least buy a lot more time) since that just occurred to me.

    https://trail4runner.com/2018/12/18/4runner-air-pump-mod/

I found a comment in there claiming the mod took out his pump months later but of course take with a grain of salt.

    Darn, thanks!

I did this mod very early on in my ownership. For me, I was concerned that in AZ, everything plastic, rubber, or foam has a potential to disintegrate without warning. My truck was already at about 4 1/2 years when I got it. As it turned out, the existing foam was in good shape but I went ahead anyways. As was just mentioned, the foam is not available separately so this seemed a good solution for me. In the end it probably doesn't matter one way or the other if you do this mod or not. I'm happy to have it done in my case.

I found the secondary air pump and O2 sensor delete my cousin did to his Tacoma. I may try it if it gets worse. Cheaper than replacing all the Toyota parts that might be causing the problem for $450. Now I can't find it again.

So i did the foam filter replacement with the uni-filter. My questions:

    1) do i put the pop off cover back on, bc Ive seen people with it on and off

    1) does the emissions pump spin all the time or when it needs to? I turned my car on after a 30 min drive and it wasnt spinning. No fault codes on dash after install.

    Thanks!

Yes, Toyota sells a repair kit, it was intended for the 2nd gen tacoma. It is not VIN specific. Includes the cover and another filter, availability appears to vary between sites.

I am confused what the repair kit actually repairs. What ive heard is that sponge gets sucked down into the pump which destroys the pump, hence why everyone switches to the uni-filter

FYI, as I was poking around the internet, I found a couple parts departments that are no longer selling 04008-3520C. There is a message:
    "Not for Sale"
    "No Longer Available For Purchase"
But I also found quite a few that list the part available and I was able to put it in the cart and get to checkout. I just didn't pull the trigger on a sale.
So... don't really know what that means. Maybe if you want one it might be prudent to get it sooner rather than later.

Yea, at best I think it would be a way to proactively replace the filter before the material breaks down for less than the cost of the entire pump assembly. The lid wouldn't be needed. I suppose the rubber gasket in the lid could dry up over time too...

not a fan of replacing something that is known to get sucked in with the same part that gets sucked in. From what i read online this was a poor design.

This kit was part of a recall or TSB involving 1GR powered second gen Tacomas. I have not heard of a 5th gen 4Runner having this issue but the kit looks like it would fit if folks are worried about the foam degrading.

I did this mod just to eliminate risk, the issue i had was the plastic housing fell apart in some areas, nothing foil tape couldn't fix.

    I used K&N 62-1370.

If anyone has the housing part code, that would be great, it does irk me knowing its broken.

This sounds more like the reason. It was for a limited number of of vehicles and that TSB has pretty much run it's course and going forward - when they're out, they're out.

I agree with you. I have done the uni filter mod myself. Just thought for those who might not want to modify emissions equipment for whatever reason the option he found is a nice one vs. a $400 pump.

I did not even know this was an "issue" and the first time I learned of it was a few days ago when I watched a video on the Uni Filter mod. I went down the rabbit hole and of course found guys who did the Uni Filter mod and two months later pulled red particles out of their pump after it failed and 5th gen owners with 200,000 miles and their foam is still in good shape. I have done neither but did look at my filter, looked fine at 73k.

I decided to do the mod but thought I’d pop off the cover every so often and check.

If the red particle issue turns out to be a systemic concern with the filter or more common defect then maybe I’ll just look into cutting a washable foam vacuum filter to shape since I kept my old filter.

What really bugs me with Toyota is that this pump only runs for 20 seconds on start up and can create a massive problem if it chunks itself. Makes no sense to even have it there

I have over 200K on my 2nd gen Tacoma and have never looked at this filter or had any issues. Now I’m curious and might take a look at it this weekend. Something else I was thinking about is the foam filter is inside the housing and is sealing the entry to the pump. This Uni filter is outside of the housing. Is the housing sealed or is this mod allowing any dust that gets into the housing to go directly into the pump?

The problem with the foam is that it ages and breaks down over time. When the foam crumbles then it is drawn into the pump which causes the pump to fail. Some have said that they have a lot of miles and years without issue with the foam. Is it possible that Toyota or the pump manufacturer has changed the material the foam is made from? Could be.

I have a 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport with the 1GR engine. I removed the foam and installed the Uni filter many years ago. I plan to inspect the housing for debris today, and if necessary, I have a new Uni ready if needed. I won't clean the one I have, as I think it is possible that someone cleaning the filter may be the reason for the red particles inside the pump inlet housing. My Tacoma has 137k on the odometer.
