I just did my plugs, pcv, coolant, serpentine belt and trans fluid for under $250. The $129 for a pcv valve is insanity. It’s a $6 part and takes 5 minutes to change.

Or he could cause leaks, excessive oil consumption and reduced MPG. A pcv valve is not a lifetime part.

Did the dealer recommend changing the PCV or is that something you asked them to do?
Also all of those quoted prices are insane. It’s all easy work. Break it up into smaller projects and do it yourself for a couple hundred bucks of parts and fluids.

Everything they quoted is what I asked for. I got these quotes because they called me telling me my 2019 4Runner might need service based on their records. I brought my 4Runner there once for a warranty claim. (Nut came off the rear garnish and rolling around in the hatch). I may be doing some work on a 2020 of a friend of mine and wanted to give her an idea of what the dealer would charge her. She has basically only had rotations and 10K oil changes by this same dealer. She's at 100K now and none of the above items have been done. (except oil changes). I've done all the above to my 4runner and other Toyotas.

So the quote is in a low-cost state where the minimum wage is $7.25/hr?

That just about never happens and you can clean it for free. It’s cheaper than getting another one even if it was free because of the fuel required to go get it and you should have brake clean already. Yes I know youtube authorized mechanics are pretty convincing.

Didn’t the discussion on replacement of the 4runner PCV get beat to death in the other thread?

We’re lucky. Other manufacturers design stuff meant to keep you coming into the dealer. Another thread brought up the BMW engine in the Grenadier that has the PCV system built into the valve cover. And it apparently fails regularly. And it throws codes that put you into limp mode when it does. Fixing it costs thousands in labor. Each time.

5th gen owners on the other hand, have to decide if we should replace it for less than 10 bucks, or just leave it be. These are the good old days!

LOL so you will clean a $6 part as opposed to replacing it? There is a rubber O-ring in there so yeah, you keep spraying brake cleaner in there. Clean a $6 part (OEM) $3.61 on Rock Auto. Freaking hysterical. I guess you could also technically clean spark plugs, air filters, etc.

Also, that youtube video I referenced in previous posts about PCV, wasnt a youtube mechanic. He is a 4R owner and a master toyota technician. Educate yourself

Wonder when Dealers will start using Affirm/Klarner to break down these service costs over 4 payments?

Not related to this thread or Toyota at all, But the PCV being brought up made me think of this conversation I had with a neighbor regarding a recall he had mentioned during the 4th of July. Got me researching and I found the below for information purposes only.

Subaru issued recalls for certain 2017-2019 Impreza and 2018-2019 Crosstrek models, as well as 2019 Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester vehicles, due to a faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve. The PCV valve can separate, potentially allowing parts to enter the engine, which can lead to a loss of power while driving and increase the risk of a crash. Subaru will inspect and replace the PCV valve, and if necessary, the engine, free of charge.
    Details of the Recall:
    • Affected Models:
      • 2019 Crosstrek, Forester, and Ascent vehicles
      • 2017-2019 Impreza and 2018-2019 Crosstrek models
    • Defect:
The PCV valve, made of aluminum, may crack and separate, potentially releasing debris into the engine.
    • Safety Risk:
The separation can cause a loss of engine power while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
    • Recall Actions:
Subaru will inspect the PCV valve and replace it if needed. If debris has already entered the engine, Subaru may replace the short block engine.
    • Notification:

Luckily we don’t have any of those issues to worry about.

Makes me wanna research why/how a location was chosen that could potentially damage an engine by freaking coming apart. WTF

All the good engineers retired and they replaced them with recent graduates to save money?

Engineer 1 fucked up with the PCV location on the 2GR-FKS

Engineer 2 didn't notice, was too busy making sure the seatbelt buckle still worked...

^I'll take the forged crank, forged con rods, piston oil squirters, and 7200-rpm redline. Lack of smog pump is a plus too.

My uncle has it in his RX. Just seems like it’s missing bottom end power.
