Does anyone know if there is a TPMS in the spare tire? Dealership wasn't even sure when I called them. From what I can feel it seems like there isn't one there when comparing the bead to my other tires.

I believe only the Limiteds have TPMS in the spare. None of the other 4R models have TPMS in the spare.

My Limited did NOT come with a TPMS sensor in the spare. It’s easy enough to check though, is the valve stem (where you inflate the tire) metal on the outside or is flexible rubber?

So me and neighbor (he has a 2018 Limited) both took our spares off and it seems that we both don't have TPMS in our spares lol. Both valve stems are just rubber.

Maybe only some Limited models have TPMS in their spares? haha

They now make tpms with rubber stems. Now does Toyota only use the metal stem?

I’ve got a 2018 offroad and no tpms. Wish it did so we could do a 5 tire rotation. Toyota only uses metal stems if it has a sensor, it’s not rubber unless it’s an aftermarket sensor. Those rubber tpms sensor stems are thicker so easy to tell.

Why wouldnt you be able to do a 5 tire rotation just because the tpms sensor is not in the spare? As long as you carry all the tires with you it should be fine.

    .
I wonder if you could purchase a 5th sensor for the 5th wheel? I don't see why there would have been reason to limit the software to receiving 4 connections when the system isn't designed to be tire specific.

Granted I'm not a vehicle design engineer... so don't take me too seriously.

I have not personally verified this but supposedly the vehicle electronics only has capacity to store 4 sensors into memory.

You can do a 5 wheel rotation you just have 1 tire you will need to manually monitor the pressure for. You might get a TPMS warning anyway because a lot of TPMS sensors look for movement from the wheel turning to know when to transmit a signal, if you do a 5 wheel rotation you may get a light anyway. It’s worth a shot through, worst that happens is you put the other TPMS wheel back on the vehicle.

I had a 2006 Tacoma off road edition and the spare tire had TPMS (so it had 5 on it). Every winter it would go off due to the cold temp. and I had to re-fill it. It was a pain in the ass.

My '04 T4R sport had one in the spare. Yes, it was a pain to top off the air. But it at least let you know that if you needed the spare - it had air. The TPMS ECU on my 17 TRD ORP only has slots for 4 serial numbers so I can't add the spare. I have heard that certain years of the 5th gen LTD had the 5th slot and the spare had a sensor.

Yep. 4 sensors and one of them is currently in the spare.because I do a 5 tire rotation. I'm told the truck only has capacity for 4 but haven't personally verified.

Remember, tires worked just fine before these little electronic gizmos.

You mean I would have to carry an air gauge and actually check my tire pressure manually at regular intervals?? That's crazy!:anonymous:

Wally - Assume your being sarcastic(??) Anyways (and not for you) you really don't have to check your tires that often tire pressure typically varies depending on the temperature, etc. My older Honda often goes off on a freezing morning then goes out a day or two later when the temp comes up a little. Hell tires can read a little fuller just from sitting in direct sunlight all day. You'll be chasing your tail and constantly re-adjusting them if you check them all the time.

It gave me all sorts of goodies. Voltage, temps, door lock adjustments, .. all sorts of neato stuffs.

Yeah I was. It seems everyone is getting lazy or it seems technology is trying to phase out any need for us to actually do anything. TPMS is just a guide for those that never even look at their tires. Just throw a few more pounds in the Honda and it won't go off anymore with the temp fluctuations.

Also I'm thinking about not even putting the TPMS sensors in a second set of rims I just bought. Just place a piece of tape over the light. :)

It's not bad,.. I normally dont care for double dins, but.. meh... its aight.
This is a Kenwood DNX 994s, with the maestro unit, to keep steering wheel controls, and unlocked all that info. I painted the soche bezel kit, as it only comes in the silver, where the ORs are the neater (imho) dark color.

Haha I don't think I could handle a piece of tape covering the light on a brand new vehicle. I just can't stand how TMPS companies require a different update every year to pair the same set of sensors. Such an overly-complicated, cash grab system.

Agreed. It doesn't have to be as difficult as it is. You could say that about a lot of things now days, but tire pressure sensors shouldn't be one of them.

I’m having trouble getting my 19 OR tire pressures to show up on my head unit even with the maestro. Was there anything special you did on the maestro unit? Also, I agree there is no TPMS in the spare based on this Toyota report.

I have the 2019 nightshade and was surprised the spare tire matched the other tires and rim. Also it had the tpms in the wheel.
