That really depends on what kind of driving you're going to be doing. Do you need a street, all terrain, mud, snow tire or some combination of the four?

Do 275's look to small.. are 285 worth all modification trouble ?

Here's the differences between the stock 265/70/17, 275/70/17 and 285/70/17's.

    Width-
    265- 10.4"
    275- 10.8"
    285- 11.2"

    Height
    265- 31.6"
    275- 32.2"
    285- 32.7

The 275's aren't going to look small because they're bigger than what you got (assuming you're running the stock TRD Pro Nitto's), but the difference between the two is negligible. We're talking less than a half an inch of width and barely over half an inch of height. The question you have to ask yourself is are you happy with the stock tire size? If you are, then you'll be happier with the 275's. If the 265's look small to you, the 275's aren't going to be the ticket either.

As for trouble with mods with the 285's, its not really that big of deal. You gotta trim some fender/mudflap and may either have to modify the cab mounts (cutting, welding) or/and aftermarket UCA's to get the hub further away from the rear of the wheel well.

Thanks, I’ve only replaced OEM shocks with Bilstein 5100 Series Shocks w/ Daystar 1.5" Rear Spacers… rubbing when backing up so did some minor trimming.

No. 275’s are the largest I would personally go.

I had 31s on my Jeep TJ and then later 35s. I never regretted the larger tires. I added too much lift and a few other things that I regretted but never the larger tires. When I am ready replace my tires I will go with 285s but I will keep my lift in check at about 2" max.
