AC drain relocation

Just watched this video on a quick fix to stop your ac drain from dumping water on your frame and rusting. Easiest fix I’ve ever done. Went to Oreillys and got a 3/8 to 3/8 brass hose connector and 10 inches of 3/8 fuel hose. Total cost $6.09. Time to install. Less than 2 minutes.

A well documented fix that's been posted many times. Did you use any kind of clamps, or just the fitting into the two hoses? And, did you secure it to the side of the frame at all or just let it hang?

 

No clamps just the brass connector. Routed it just like in the video behind the splash shield. Stupid easy fix.

 

Yep, did mine right after I bought it. Dumb to drain the AC line right on top of the frame.

I have wondered if the reduced inside diameter of the fitting between the existing hose and the extension could cause a possible clogging point ??

My drain hardly drips on the frame during summer months. Must be the low humidity, usually between 10-15 %.
I am not disputing Viking, but I fail to understand how plain water can cause that area to rust. There must be salt residue on those frames. I rinse the frame off every time I wash the car and have seen no evidence of rust anywhere after 7 years. Must be a rust belt problem.

 

Yup. I did this mod last summer. Very simple, worth the 5 minutes and $7.

 

Not really worried about it, but have had the same thought. I have suffered drain tube blockage on other vehicles that backs up inside the vehicle. Stinky.

 

In the west and southwest, it seems to be a solution looking for a problem. No rust here.

Oddly enough, a search for the ARINIX tip (just the tip!) shows that it's usually $30 or so.

 

Yeah unless I'm missing something, the parts description on bam (and other sites) doesn't actually list it has the Arinix tip, it just states its the drain line itself. ?

 

Yep. The "Arnix tip" is 87265-33010. Note the pesticide wears off after a year, so it's a yearly cash grab if you keep it up.

 

Yeah, as someone who does his own pest control that's what I figured. For me, and having done this mod on my 2013 and never had an issue, I'm not going to worry about adding that tip to my 2023.

 

It’s cheap insurance, so it makes sense to do it.

 

If you do your own pest control (I know, a lot of people don't), you can simply spray a bit of Talstar/Tempo/Suspend around the end of the drain line (not in it) and achieve the same thing.

 

By extending the hose all the way to the bottom. Doesn't that expose the hose to all road elements.
In addition the pipe has been narrowed in-between. Risking blockage from mold/fungus growth.
The new gap creates entry past the splash guards.

There’s been at least a couple of times I almost decided to do this mod. Each time I decided to leave well enough alone for these reasons.

In any case, I rinse out my frame with fresh water often enough. Along with the wool wax, the frame area it filters over is still rust free.

That said, I have considered making a drip deflector to allow the water to drip onto a little ramp of sorts mounted to the spot the water falls, so it immediate gets diverted off the frame and onto the ground.

But then I got lazy and never got around to it lol.

You are thinking too much into it. Its just a rubber hose that extends the drain pipe by 6 to 8 inches. It can be zip tied around the area so it does not move. Infact you could add just 4 inches of hose to put it just past the top of the frame.
No additional entry points are made. That area is completely open to the elements and adding this little hose does nothing to it.
Also, the amount of water that falls is a tiny little stream. Enough space even through the connector for it to pass.
And the AC drain pipe is already rested at the footwell, so you not really adding any weight to it or pulling it

Now if the clean water of the AC drain actually rusts the frame or not is a different question.

 

Exactly. Do you worry about rain water that gets on the frame. My take is the A/C drip does not stay there very long when the vehicle is movie anyway and when you park and turn off the A/C how much water can really be there. Seems more a solution looking for a problem. ????

 

sweet jesus! you will build a "ramp" to divert the water but wont add a hose to just extend it bc you're worried about dust and rocks.

The though of mold growing in a line that was constricted by the hose couplings is what actually gave me pause.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I’m full of great ideas that I never actually do because I keep thinking of what ifs. I also have commitment issues.
