Hi, I am researching rust protection and many people recommend to apply some sort of spray coating under the car. What ones do you guys recommend and also where would I got that done professionally? If anyone knows any places near Flemington NJ please let me know. Thank you

I did it my self. I used Blaster Surface Shield since i already have some rust. 2 cans covered the majority of primary areas. I also got Fluid Film since it seems to be popular and ill use that before winter for the rest.

My son got some Amsoil protectant with the dispenser straw, but it kept shooting off. Lost 2 in the frame. lol

I think there are shops that do it for the best coverage, but IMO covering the problem areas like frame and other trouble spots is more than enough.

Annoying that my truck smells like a burning candle now though. lol

Fluid Film and Wool Wax in spray cans are the most common 2 talked about. They are easy to use for any average guy.
If you are going to a shop that does it professionally they are going to use whatever they use, some use cosmoline because its cheap. Typically those guys are buying the woolwax in 5 gallon buckets and running air compressor systems thru a spray gun.

Do you have rust and corrosion now?
Are you wanting to stop rust that is looking bad?
Or, is your underneath vehicle needing preventative coatings?
There are chemicals that actually convert rust (brown color) to a grey stable compound (grey color) that once coated with a sealer/paint will last years and prevent its spread. Best used on selected parts like brackets, mounts etc.
I use Ospho. Wally sells it. Marine stores sell it.
I have used it with excellent results on rusty steel on many vehicles for decades.IMG_9253.jpg

I used Fluid Film inside the frame and also take it yearly to Krown (oil-based spray) to get it treated. Messy, but effective at stopping rust.

I went with WaxOyl Hardwax Plus on my frame (basically when new). A year and a half later, numerous car washes with undercarriage spray, driving in the rain, etc. it is still in great shape and slightly tacky if you touch it. For frame internals I'm going to try Eastwood Internal Frame Coating, they seem to get really high marks on the car restoration sights for protecting inside the frame.

I rust proofed my truck when new, before the first winter.
Three years later with no touch ups and basically no rust at all, except for a couple of small spots that maybe the spray missed around the u joints.
I lifted the car one side and took off the tires. Then applied a coat of CRC heavy duty marine rust inhibitor to everything… I mean everything. Drop the spare etc.
Then after that I took cans of fluid film and bought the spray attachment with the multidirectional head and sprayed inside all the framework. Took the hose and put it in all the holes in the frame and sprayed as a retracted the hose.
It’s important to do the CRC first as this is a fluid that dries like a soft wax. It does not leave a mess of the frame. Makes it look a dull black. Still there and still waxy three years later.
Then the fluid film as this is thinner and will wick and creep into all areas and crevices.
I suggest buying a quality paint respirator, some old clothes and hood
to wear as you apply. Definitely don’t want to be breathing the crc. Set up a fan also to blow overspray away.
I sprayed the fluid film into door cavities and body panels as well.
I think I went thru about 7-8 cans of each when all done. Yeah I went heavy. It took me a weekend on my back in the driveway.
I’m convinced this is the best way to do this. Crc sticks and does not wash away. And it’s not messy after the fact. Check out project farm you tube video. I ordered it from a marine supply store. Lighthouse marine supply in riverhead. Good guys and they ship anywhere

Wool Wax. If you have a compressor, buy their spray gun kit.

Dude- Flemington NJ here also. Delaware Township to be precise. Not sure if you've had this done already but if not, I had a fellow 4Runner enthusiast do mine last Fall over in Summit. He works for a VW dealer full time, and uses one of their bays after hours as a side gig to undercoat Toyotas specifically. He's a Fluid Film man, so that's what I went with. DM me if you'd like Stephen DeRosa's digits.

When you have your truck sprayed...make sure to remove all the skids and get the areas where rust hides.

Remove the fuel tank skid and get the straps, drop the spare tire and get the hoist mechanism, remove the front skids plates and cover the area with the foam air deflector for the radiator. If you have KDSS, remove the skid on the frame rail and blast the control module.

Do you use multiple coats of Ospho? What to you coat that with? I was considering coating it with Rustoleum Rusted Metal Primer then Flat black paint on my frame.

Ospho is versatile. Does not seem to affect sound powdercost. I wire brush, chip, sand etc rust to see some steel shine under. Then soak with ospho. Repeat again if necessary till the brown is gone. When left to dry, you will see grey where there was brown . If you really penetrated & soaked you might see some white powdery on top of grey. When I see this- I wash with clean water and nylon brush. Then fully dry and you should see just grey. I paint over with brushed rustoleum to get thick paint (where spray does not reach) especially at welds, corners and connections. I find on-line small cans (1/2 pints, pints) easiest to work with. In some States (CA + ) the best paints are not available because of their solvents. Use gloss, semi or flat to best match original finish. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection. Keep a bottle of water handy in case of face/skin contact with acidic ospho.
