I just bought a brand new 2018 4runner TRD pro and love it. However, I'm not in live with the large shift nob. I like the compact and neat transfer case shift nob and would like to match it. I did a little research online and it looks like a stock FJ shift job matches up identical. However, I have seen some posts that say it fits a 4runner and some that say it does not. I also saw a post that says if you take off the very bottom silver transition piece this makes the FJ knob fit.

I need help from someone on this forum that knows the real answer to these questions.

Can I buy the stock FJ shift knob for my 2018 trd pro? Will it require modifications to fit?

Thanks all. Glad to be part of the 4runner fam. Below is a pic of what I'm talking about in this post.

I also did this minor mod. I found a FJC shifter on eBay and then had to shorten it to fit the Gen5. I love the look.

It’s a 2 piece shifter so the top knob pops off the shaft. I’m assuming he then cut the shaft portion down.

No idea. I bought one off eBay years back and put it in my Tacoma by doing the opposite of this thread and actually extending it up from the shift rod. I spent $25 for a used one.

Part #s I found if you are an auto:
    3350435103B0 (w/ metal trim)

    3350435093B0 (w/o metal trim)

I don’t know what metal trim means. I know the FJ shifters were either gray/black or all black so maybe that’s what it means.

looks like there are 3 available. The shifter has 3 parts to it, the middle pieces pull apart and the silver part on the bottom. I first pulled off the silver piece and it fit but I did not like the look then I cut 3/4" off the middle. Here is a great write up...

Me too so I tried a mitre saw for the straight cut, that kind of worked and it didn't. The cutoff piece went flying somewhere yet to be found.

Instead of trimming the shaft or taking off the bottom piece of the shift knob, I simply inserted a socket set screw into the shift knob prior to install. It gives just enough space to clear the side of bezel/console when shifting out of park. I used socket set screws, metric M8 x 1.25 x 10mm purchased from our local hardware store. Cost under $2.00 for 2pcs. (only 1 required for this mod, allen keys not included).

Alternatively, you could just drill and thread a hole in a pepper grinder to have the same effect

I missed this thread when it was originally posted.

I had a FJ knob from EBay, pull it apart and cut 3/4" from the middle, then reassemble it. Cutting from the middle lets you conceal an uneven cut if you screw it up.

    Nice upgrade.

Ebay one is about $47, including shipping (from Dubai ), and Sparks' offering is $57.37...edit - Sparks wants $15 for shipping, so $72+/-...

Question - what is the reason for trimming the middle section? I've read where it's also been installed as is...

Personally I'd start a saved search on Ebay and give it a month or so, one will pop up cheap and you can snipe it.

The knob is a hair too long. It has to be trimmed or has to have something inside on the threads to keep from bottoming out (another poster showed his set screw trick). Personally I prefer cutting the mid because it still gives you full engagement of the knob threads, but YMMV

Thanks for the insight. I went ahead and ordered the Ebay one...$47.01 to my door.

I'll check it out once it arrives, and do whatever is necessary for best fitment. I really like that it matches the TC shift knob...

I may have a TRD shift handle up for sale soon.

Ebay FJC knob ordered Monday, arrived yesterday (2-day shipping from Dubai, UAE!), and is a genuine Toyota part, new in the package. I got the length trimmed on my radial arm saw - I started with 1/2" instead of 3/4", just for grins. Before that, though, I threaded the FJC knob onto the shift rod as is, and it actually worked with no trimming, sort of. The only place the lower trim ring hit the bezel was when you move the knob to the right to shift out of P, and just barely. Once you move it back toward the center console into R, N, or D, it doesn't even come close to hitting anything. So for now, 1/2" off. I just need to trim out the small plastic ring inside the lower half of the shaft with either a dremel, a very sharp narrow chisel, or an Exact-o knife.

Finished up this morning. I only removed 1/2" from the middle, which gave me plenty of clearance to the shifter bezel:
