I've got a friend with a 2008 4runner. The stock shocks are shot. I'm not a "suspension guy". I'm at a total loss for what to recommend. Can you help me out in coming up with a good solution?

He wants to not spend a lot of money. He said he'd just go with OEM at the dealer, but if he could get something better for not much more money, he's open to it. And if it lifted it an inch, that would be ok, too.

Are there any options that would be a direct replacement (without replacing springs) that would lift 1/2" or 1" without compromising ride quality?

I don't know if they will work, but i have the take offs from my 17 SR5 with about 800 miles on them. Front shocks w/coils, rear springs, uca's, what part of the country are you in?

Oh man. That would be sweet if it worked. I'll look into it. I'm nowhere near you though.

Go with the 5100s, ride quality will be very good, and you can use the stock springs. They have perches on the shock tube itself that allow you to select what height you want. If he only wants to level it, but needs new shocks this is a good option for him. Having these also opens up the option to use them if lifting the 4runner later too. For example, he could get lift springs like OME 885s and you could use these 5100s still.

I had 5100's on both my 3rd gen and my 5th gen. The ride was excellent and I didn't have any issues with them except for the rubber boots that protect the shaft coming off on both of the rear shocks on my 5th gen. Personally I'll be avoiding Bilstein on my current 4th gen due to them refusing to warranty the shock if you take it off road or use non-OEM springs with them.

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like 5100's is the way to go. So, you can install them and maintain factory rake OR level the front end. Do I have that right- 2 options?

Also, how would you describe the ride in comparison to OEM SR5 shocks?

Typically the 5100's have 4 settings you can use for lifting the front using a little snap ring set into grooves that the lower spring seat sits on. The settings are stock height, .85", 1.75", and 2.5" of lift. On my 3rd gen they were noticeably stiffer than stock. On my 5th gen they were a little stiffer but since it was such a heavy truck it still had a good ride. Can't speak to the 4th gen but I'd expect it to be stiffer than the SR5 shocks.

Is 1.75" the setting to use to level it?

If you set the 5100's at a setting higher than the stock height, does it preload the springs?

Eibach is another option, much like the Bilstein 5100s, but said to ride less stiff.

I just took off my Trd Off road premium suspension off my 2019. Front shocks UCAS rear springs and rear shocks. If he’s interested. Everything is in a box and I can arrange for shipping. I’m in Los Angeles. I even have my trd Off road wheels and tires. Everything has less than 500 miles on them.

I'll have to verify if it's plug and play on a 2008.
