255/80r17 no rubbing no cutting

After a ton a waffling about size and reading other forum posts, I finally got a lift installed and new tires. I went with the at3ws in 255/80r17. The lift is Bilstein 6112s maxed out, 5100s in the rear with Bilstein 1.5 springs. There's absolutely no rubbing at all, and I think I could have gone with a 34" tire if it was skinny enough. Hope this helps anybody agonizing over tire size.

 

Looks good! I really wanted to run this size tire, but I hate that they only come in load range. E. How's the drivability been with the heavier tire?

 

I had a small crisis when my installer said he had a hard time getting them on cuz they're so stiff, but they drive beautifully. They're quite and smooth, better than stock I think. Of course that could be the 6112s.

I used Bilsteins eq series standard springs. I forgot to mention I also had Bilstein b8 ucas installed. Steering is definitely a bit heavier with the at3ws, any weight savings you can get will help

32-33 cold seems to be perfect. It's so hot here rn that they've gotten up to like 38, they start to get a little noisy at higher psi but nothing crazy.

 

I decided on 255/80/17 in the Falken Wildpeak AT4W after much research. To my surprise it just barely scrubbed my drivers side mudflap but only while turning and compressed. After an alignment there is no scrubbing at all. The ride is very good as well. I’m on Bilstein 6112’s in the front and 5100’s in the rear.

 

Do the trd wheels have more offset than the ORPs?

 

Sweet I am going to order mine today and will be putting them on OEM steelies +19 offset. Hoping for minimal/no rubbing.

 

Looks lime they are +4mm.

 

Mall crawling! I decided to go with Goodyear Duratracs 255/80r17. Zero rubbing and running a 6112/5160 lift (3in) with Dobinsons UCA.

 

Finally got them! Can confirm no rubning but it is pretty close, will prob need to push the caster. Thanks to everyone on this thred, hepled greatly deciding.

 

Looks great guys! I was just reading about tire pressure today and realized I had been running mine like 10 pounds low. With e load the sidewall is supposed to run with way higher pressure. Used an online calculator and it says to run 42 cold. I just filled up to 44 hot and the ride is a little stiffer but not in a bad way.

Hey guys! I'm thinking about getting the 255/80/17 and wanted to check in on y'all and see how ride quality still is? Have any regrets?

 

Ride quality is fine with my Duratrac RT in load range E due to the taller sidewall.

 

That is good to hear. I was actually just looking today at the Duratrac RT. What psi do you keep them at?

 

I realize this post is 4 months old, but the online calculator is ass-backwards. Why would a heavier load range tire with more sidewall plies need more pressure to achieve the same load capacity as a P-metric tire? That's against common sense.

 

32 front, 30 rear.

 

IMO or by previous experience;
- it wasn't a good choice not experiencing ride quality first had (like on a friends vehicle or some sort).
- it would be a bad choice to to ignore to take action if you don't like something and let the brain overcome the happy feeling of having a new thing.

I wasted time and money buying Load E tires. After some miles I sold them on facebook market place and got Load C tires. Now with my light duty use I'm surviving with standard load tires.

 

I just installed some 255/80R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers last week and did a wheeling weekend with OEX in Uwharrie Forest. Keep them at stock tire pressure, 32psi. E load does have a slightly firmer ride, but nothing I regret. There were a couple staff/volunteers at OEX that run 4Runners, and they all highly recommended the 255/80R17 size. I was very happy with them, no rubbing or trimming needed at all under full flex. The spare barely fits, only about .25-.5" clearance to the KDSS bar, but it fits.

 

I really like mine, absolutely zero difference in ride quality from the previous C load tire, BFG K0 2 285/70/17 to my current Falken Wildpeak AT4W's 255/80/17 in E load.

 

I have over 40,000 miles on my 255/80 Falken ATW3's while running them at 40-42psi cold with no issue. Is the ride firm? I guess, but not uncomfortably so. I get decent milage ~17mpg (lifted and often loaded up) I actually prefer the firmer ride and feedback versus the pillows that came from the factory. I feel like this falls under many things on the internet that gets blown out of proportion. Years ago I spoke with tire design engineers from several big brands (Good Year, Michelin, Firestone) and all of them said that E load tires are designed and built with higher pressures in mind. When I go off road I drop them down to 15psi and they conform and grip anything in front of me.

My suggestion is try several different pressures and see what you think.
