    Anyone running 255/85/17’s on a 5th Gen?

If so how are you liking that set up? What suspension are you running with it?

Besides the obvious trimming and cutting(BMC), and hammering what other modifications did you have to do?

Did you run a tune or regear as well?

I haven’t seen a whole lot of threads on this specific size, pretty much only tire available is the Mickey Thompson AT.

I’m currently running a Bilstein 6112/5160 set up, 2.6” up front with SPC control arms, Wheelers Superbumps and 1” rear springs in the rear.

    Looking forward to the feedback.

Just curious to know as a noob, beside better cutting in sand and snow what’s the advantage to factory size tires. Is it The extra height pickup without the extra drag of the wider contact patch of a wider 285/70 17?

I’m currently running Wildpeak AT4 255/80/17’s and love them. I like the ability to run the taller tire with the factory TRD Pro wheels. There seems to be benefits with the taller tire air’d down and the ability to “form” with the terrain. Pretty cool video from Kai and his YouTube channel.

Again, I’m just researching and seeing if anyone else has experience with this tire size.

It was just temporary for me, I grabbed a used set on facebook marketplace. I am also lifted on the OME BP-51 kit with UCA, about 2.5 inches all around.

I removed the front and rear mud flaps. No issues with the TRD Pro wheels. Then I added Spydertrax 30mm spacers. I had minor rubbing on the front bumper, the rear cleared the body mount by 1/2 of an inch. (I am keeping this setup for more offroad use in the future, I had no issues just had eyes on a larger tire and didnt want to do 255/85)

Then... I added some wheels and tires, 17x8.5 with an offset of 0 (zero) and 285/75 R17 BFG All Terrains. I trimmed the front bumper by hand (nothing extreme) and got a BMC done. It will rub when rock crawling, but thats not in the plans .

No regear yet, undecided on if I am going to keep her long term. 4Runners are not sporty and I didnt help. Its drivable, mileage and acceleration just suffer. I have driven from Tennessee to California with no issues, and will probably do a coast to coast early 2025 with this setup. The only change I would make would be -12 offset for the wheels.

    cheers!
