    Anyone running 255/85/17’s on a 5th Gen?

If so how are you liking that set up? What suspension are you running with it?

Besides the obvious trimming and cutting(BMC), and hammering what other modifications did you have to do?

Did you run a tune or regear as well?

I haven’t seen a whole lot of threads on this specific size, pretty much only tire available is the Mickey Thompson AT.

I’m currently running a Bilstein 6112/5160 set up, 2.6” up front with SPC control arms, Wheelers Superbumps and 1” rear springs in the rear.

    Looking forward to the feedback.

Just curious to know as a noob, beside better cutting in sand and snow what’s the advantage to factory size tires. Is it The extra height pickup without the extra drag of the wider contact patch of a wider 285/70 17?

I’m currently running Wildpeak AT4 255/80/17’s and love them. I like the ability to run the taller tire with the factory TRD Pro wheels. There seems to be benefits with the taller tire air’d down and the ability to “form” with the terrain. Pretty cool video from Kai and his YouTube channel.

Again, I’m just researching and seeing if anyone else has experience with this tire size.

It was just temporary for me, I grabbed a used set on facebook marketplace. I am also lifted on the OME BP-51 kit with UCA, about 2.5 inches all around.

I removed the front and rear mud flaps. No issues with the TRD Pro wheels. Then I added Spydertrax 30mm spacers. I had minor rubbing on the front bumper, the rear cleared the body mount by 1/2 of an inch. (I am keeping this setup for more offroad use in the future, I had no issues just had eyes on a larger tire and didnt want to do 255/85)

Then... I added some wheels and tires, 17x8.5 with an offset of 0 (zero) and 285/75 R17 BFG All Terrains. I trimmed the front bumper by hand (nothing extreme) and got a BMC done. It will rub when rock crawling, but thats not in the plans .

No regear yet, undecided on if I am going to keep her long term. 4Runners are not sporty and I didnt help. Its drivable, mileage and acceleration just suffer. I have driven from Tennessee to California with no issues, and will probably do a coast to coast early 2025 with this setup. The only change I would make would be -12 offset for the wheels.

    cheers!

What'd you end up doing? I was in the same boat recently. Ultimately decided load range C was more important than the extra clearance of 255/80 or 255/85 and the LR E those entail. Went with a 255/75. Only 1/2" taller than stock, slightly narrower, but wider choice, cheaper, easy to get, no cutting. Nokian Outpost nAT in my case. More comfortable for the 95% of time on road even given the lot of time I spend offroad. Not a hard core rock crawler in any event. But I do believe for a 4runner, hard core rock crawling justifying an LR E tire is rare.

So, just to be clear, no one here is running 255/85's? I'm running 255/80's and they fit really nicely with minimal work, but it seems going to 35's like a 255/85 is a huge step-up. My other option is 285/75, still running the factory wheel for TRD OR. Yes, I'm cheap and willing to stay with pizza cutters for minimal modifications.

It's a rare one. Only rigs I've seen running these are some fourth Gen Tacoma's.

The only manufacturer (that I'm aware of) making a 255/85/17 is Mickey Thompson.
    Baja Boss AT
    34.57" Diameter
    65 lbs

Opinion: I've considered this size but but not a fan of the pizza cutters personally. I prefer a wide contact patch for better flotation.
(and yes I understand the pros and cons of wide vs skinny tires)
Currently on 285/75/17 AT4W's looking into 35x12 Baja Boss MT's

I'm running the Baja Boss "pizza cutters". I'm in that thread above as well. Personally, I think they look perfect on the 5th gen. Unrelated note, I also have them on my dually.

I had the 285 Dick Cepek and after a trip last year going to go to 305, Baja Boss but the weight was just too much. It was 25+ lb per tire. So I opted for these and love em. Been in the snow, rain, mud and no issues. I’m still iffy on air down since my RRW are at the max width. Thinking about going back to stock trd pro with a 7” width. Only aired down to 24 with these.

Other option is Kenda RT in 35x10.5-17 in load range D, would be 265 wide in metric. Been wheeling them on my Tacoma for 4 years with no cab mount chop.

So, that's where I'm going here. I figure I need to do a BMC, even for 34's (285/75-17), but I'm not willing to trim my fender flares at the top, which is basically what I'm seeing everyone do once they go to 35's. I guess, other than a BMC, what would one need to do to switch to 35's? I'm already going to a 4.56 gear, so that is already in the planning. Or is the best plan just to stick with the 34's and let well enough be? I ask about the 255/85's and the 35X10.5's, because I know from watching plenty of Tinkerer's Adventure videos, it's easier to fit narrow tires on stock rims. And there are some benefits to pizza cutters. I'm not 100% committed to the pizza cutter look despite currently being on 255/80's. I think 285 is about my limit for the stock rim and any higher will just put more strain on the steering and suspension parts, mostly unnecessarily IMHO. I do think wider tires look cool, I just think that narrow tires are more functional.

Small edit, I do plan to go to a Eibach 2.5-3" front lift and 1" rear lift before I go with larger tires. I'm only on a 2" level kit right now with the 255/80's

I tuned, but no regear. I drive way too much freeway for that. I got the tune because of the mountains in Oregon sucked with a fully loaded down 4Runner.

I got the BMC because I’m an idiot that got -25 RRW and put on 285s. I still had rubbing in spots but as soon as I went 255/85 all the noise stopped and I had better turning radius again, that why I’m still considering getting new/old wheels.

Here are so pics of mine, let me know if you want more.

it would be nice to get an intermediate gear set like 4.10s for those of us that put lots of higher speed highway miles in.

Very interesting, and good to know. My 0 offset wheels pushed outward 30mm after installing Spidertrax (of course) - also forced my hand into bmc lol. I liked 255/85’s very much till I realized my 9”w wheels aren’t supported.. and I’m not eating the cost on new wheels, now. Members know your 5th gen is one of the most badass.

I’m always considering a 4.56 whenever Premier or StellarBuilt has a sale. It’s just that damn itch.

9” is the absolute max for Mickey’s 255/85. I called them and it had been the max on their site for a while. RRW also said it was fine. I was at StellarBuilt and they said I should be fine as long as I’m not loaded down and tearing ass into a bend. But that doesn’t make me feel 100% safe as I’ve been coming in heavier than I hoped.

    And thanks!!

So Henry, you're running 255/85-17's They look bigger (wider) in those pics, but anyway. I see you have aftermarket or at least custom fender flares. Did you need to do any cutting on the fender, meaning the exterior cosmetic piece, not fender liners inside the wheel well? I'm sticking with the stock TRD Off Road wheels and no spacers initially. If I needed spacers, I'm not entirely opposed. Seems like a BMC is needed with either 285/75-17 or 255/85-17. i will regear to 4.56, so that is not a concern. i do some highway driving, but it will still carry far less rpms than any other vehicle I have over 65mph. So stock rim, stock off set, which of those tires will fit better without modification? I apologize for sounding like a broken record.
