Spare stored tire inside cabin cargo area

Does anyone think it would be possible to run the chain from the spare tire pully up into the rear cargo area through the metal floor use it to cinch down the spare tire inside the truck?

 

Possible? Sure, but you’d be better off figuring out an alternative method before cutting holes in your 4Runner.

(For rare use I’d probably ratchet strap it down to the tie downs and keep it behind an upright seat, for a more permanent solution you can look into building a metal frame to slide it into.)

 

Not really if I’m understanding your question correctly. You’d have to cut a hole in the floor for the chain, cut the pulley system off the frame and remount it upside down somehow. And even if you could, you wouldn’t want to be because the frame and body flex differently. Much easier to figure out how to secure the tire from the inside.

Don't need a hoist when going with gravity instead of against gravity. Either use a Y-shaped ratchet strap or bolt a Yakima spare tire mount to your floor:

Tires stink. That's why mine stays in the factory location.
And what if you get a flat driving down a cattle country road.
Well then again, some might like it.

 

The smell goes away after awhile.

I hadn't really thought much about having to put a dirty flat in there, though. I suppose a tarp would be a good thing to have in that situation.

 

My buddy built a little spare tire platform in the back to have his 35” spare sit up right back there, secured with ratchet straps. Took up a lot of space so he eventually welded in the swingout from 80% off road.

I’d ditch the chain idea. I don’t think cutting a hole there and making that mechanism work for that configuration makes much sense personally

 

Noo you REALLY don't want to be doing this. Creating spaces for moisture and water to get in and permanently modding something that no one would want which would really ruin your resale value.

Why do you want to do this? What are the drivers? What do you want to get out of this?

 

Really only two places for a spare on 4Runner - stock location with stock system to access/secure it, or a bumper-mounted tire carrier/swing-away
Sure, you could put it in the back and take up a lot of space while making the truck smell like sh*t. And, you could put the spare on your roof, raise the center of gravity and when you need it and drop it off the roof rack, you can watch it bounce 100 yards down the trail and almost hit three trucks before coming to a stop...
(Not me, but I was right there yelling "STOP!" )

 

Most of the time I leave it under the truck. This past trip we stayed in a cabin so had more room in the rig. It worked well anchoring down to floor tie downs. Never moved with plenty of off camber moments others in convoy had stuff hitting them in the head.

 

It's actually not that bad. It only smelled when it was new.

Plus, It's not all scraped up and dirty from being underneath. And, I don't have a tire swing to deal with every time I want to get into the cargo area.

 

I was just thinking, may be having the tire on the passenger side would be little better? Help teeny tiny big with weight balance? Surly nothing closer to battery weight + 23gal of fuel.

 

It might, but it's way more visible on the passenger side. On the driver's side, I barely notice it.

I also have a bunch of recovery gear and tools underneath the platform on the right, which probably weighs more than the tire.

 

Factory spare location in my 97 Grand Cherokee was standing up in the cargo area on the driver's side. It definitely took up room, I removed it a few times when hauling stuff.

SUPER easy to get in and out. It had a factory cover on it, so it didn't smell until I replaced it with a new matching spare when I upsized to 31s. It didn't last long, but I'm weird and like new tire smell.

The cover had a zippered pocket, I stored my recovery strap inside the wheel.

Agree the best location is a swing out. I don't have confidence mine would even crank down at this point after 10 years in New England.

I carry a compressor and a plug kit, the spare is the last resort.

On the other 4R site, there was a guy wanting to mount a 35 under his, i did a bunch of measurements and found that with slight modding you can put a 35 in the stock location.
I have 2 4R and run a 32.5x11.5 and a 33x12.50 in stock location and its pretty tight but i can get a finger between the tire and the tight spots. With an hour and a welder and some fab skills you can easily notch and weld up the areas that need to be clearanced and fit a 35.

 

Quite a few vehicles had the spare standing up in the back on the drivers side even the early suburbans and others. The main thing in these vehicles including your Jeep was the wheel well was further ahead and the tire basically sat in the pocket behind the wheel well, to the rear pillar.
The 4R wheel well is so far back, you cant fit a spare behind the wheel well, its gotta go beside the wheel well and hangs way out into the cargo area like so

I mean it works, it certainly fits, but its not tucked in behind the wheel well and against the glass like your Jeep and most all the others are.

 

I never owned a Jeep. I don't need it tight to the glass. I have a bunch of smaller items behind it, on top of the wheel well. It takes up about 25% of the floor space in the cargo area, which I find acceptable. Others might not like it. But, I think it's better than some other options.

 

A swing out will always be in the way of accessing the cargo area, and blocking your rear view. I personally think it's one of the worst options.

Crank the tire down and hose down the mechanism with lube periodically. The one in my '03 worked after 15 Wisconsin winters, although it was a bit stubborn.

I was directly talking to the other guy, who said he had a jeep, and i was using your picture as an example of how our vehicular modes of transportation wont allow the tire to tuck in behind the wheel well.

 

50 lbs? Lol, try 90 lbs.

Are you assuming that it isn't secured?

In addition to being secured, 90% of the time, it's behind the rear seat-back.

Edit: But, I do understand that it's a potential concern. Any unsecured cargo can become a projectile in a collision.

When I got my front bumper at Demello in Riverside I was checking out their rear bumpers for 4Runners and Fjs. He said he was moving his spare inside because of the weight distribution too. I haven’t been back in over a year, but you should call Jason up to see if he built out the solution he had drawn up.
