I purchased my 2018 4Runner last December and it has 8500 miles on it. 3 weeks ago the engine light went on and I heard a knocking. It was determined that while casting the lifters and cams, sand got in there and they were defective. The dealer replaced the top half of the engine. I had it for 3 days and the knocking started again (yesterday actually) SO back to the dealer and I have a rental again. I have asked for a new engine but will hear from the service manager on Monday

I am worried that I got a lemon which sucks because I dearly love "Kevin"

    Any advice?

    To be determined
That is definitely sad but sounds like your hands are tied. While it’s a pain to not have it the good thing is it’s entirely under warranty and you can rest assured that Toyota will make it right, eventually.

Depending on how long you are without it I’d hit them up for compensation towards the payments you have to make while it’s not in your possession

That is sweet of you Julie, I didn't know you cared ;)

...but seriously, that is a case of the 'sucks'!!

My experience with Toyota has been exceptional I hope that they will honor correcting the issue for you and get you back on the road soon.

Did you take if off road somewhere and suck up some sand or something? This really scares me since I just picked up my brand new 2018 yesterday.

sadly no, I do take it off road but I was told the parts were soft casts, defective from the factory. Interestingly , the service guy said this didn't warrant a recall. Maybe it will down the road but Im sure they cast a whole bunch at once so this HAS to potentially affect bunch of vehicles.

Meh... 2018 here, and I'm not even gonna give it a second thought. I'm sure they will take care of it. They have to. Dont have a choice. As for tripping out about it on my end, nah. Not even for a second.

It has been determined that the cam chain tensoner was at fault. The new one as been ordered. Seems like that should have been done when they rebuilt the top half of the engine ? I know nothing about engines. I should have Kevin back on Friday

Personally I think your way to confident about Toyota's concern about "doing the right thing." In my opinion they all cut corners and do as little as possible to make things right, they all do it even Toyota. Whatever just my .02

Yes all 4runners are made in Japan. Time will tell if this is the last of the issues

I'm not buying this BS. It would have affected far more 1GR-FE 4.0L motors than just the one here and we'd all heard about it. It also would have been caught during engine assembly. Timing chain tensioner, possibly, but the sand casting diagnosis is most likely malarky.

I think it’s weird too. It would have triggered a recall I would imagine. The dealer said it wouldn’t

Update. I was supposed to pick him up today but there is an odd yellow fluid from the cylinder head. The service manager has never seen this in 30 years and a guy from Toyota flew here to get a sample and analyze it. Results will be back Wednesday. I have demanded a new vehicle but have to wait for fluid results to come back.

Agreed. Toyota has case managers dealing with probably thousands of issues every single day. Be your own advocate and stay on them.

So and end to the story. The dealer has replaced old Kevin with a new Kevin. Didn’t get the tan leather interior but we shall carry on !
