Hi 4 Runners, I bought my 2018 4 Runner Premium not quite a month ago and so far loving it.
I am not new to the 4x4 world due to my work as a Archaeologist so I have traveled the roads less traveled for years. However, now that I am semi-retired I didn't find the need for my 2011 Jeep Rubicon with more than 50K hard off-road miles anymore and wanted the reliability and comfort of a 4 Runner and still get out into the dirt when needed.

Question, I bought the Toyota extra care $1,947.00 which covers it for 7 years 100K
any opinions whether its worth it or cancel it?
    Thanks

It depends on what the "extra care" covers? Can you advise?

I am debating the same thing right now. I got talked into the Toyotacare premium, as well as the Vehicle Service Agreement Platinum. They were about $1500 each. I think I am going to drop the toyotacare as it looks like does not last long enough to cover any of the major recommended services, mostly just oils changes, tire rotations etc. I will be doing my oil every 5k, so I would burn through mine pretty quick. The VSA platinum seems worth it to me as it is almost a bumper to bumper out to 75k.

I am curious to see what you do and what other people think.

You bought one of the most well-regarded vehicles currently available. Even if the Extra Care thing was a bumper to bumper 100,000 mile warranty, I will guarantee you two things with 99.9% certainty:

    1) It won't cover damage to your 4Runner that is caused by off-roading.
    2) If you never take the 4Runner off road, and you don't drive like a maniac, it will last you well over 100,000 miles with no trouble that won't be addressed by a recall... or at least no such trouble that will be anywhere near as expensive as that warranty.

Of course, one never knows. Maybe 2018 will be a "weird year" for the 4Runner. My mom bought a 2001 Honda Accord new, and that is also one of the most highly regarded vehicles ever made. She bought the extended warranty... and was glad she did when the transmission went out at 75,000 miles. (She has a very light foot... it wasn't her driving that blew it.) Apparently, in that one year, there was a common issue with a magnet in the transmission which would somehow go bad, and cause premature transmission failure. I don't know if there was ever a recall issued, but I do know that because she had the extended warranty, she got her transmission replaced for free.

They tried to talk me into buying an extended warranty on my Prius v three years ago, and I turned them down. I figured I'd get 100,000 good miles out of it with little to no trouble. As of today I'm over 158,000 good miles with no trouble. Glad I didn't buy the extended warranty. (You should also know that from my time selling cars, I know for a fact that dealerships LOVE selling extended warranties because they're mostly gravy for the dealer. You're paying for much more than you are likely to receive. If you can cancel this extended warranty and get your money back, you should. Or, at least, I would.)

Well I guest I will give my input on this. This is a big debateable issue. I have been driving Toyota’s for a long time. They have been very good to me. When I bought my 17 Pro I was back and forth with the wife on this. She thinks I should not have takin the extended warranty. I chose to take it for a few reasons. I took the 10year 100,000 miles premium warranty. Covers pretty much everything and if I would decide to trade in my 4runner it is transferable. I don’t plan on doing any mods to affect my warranty. I did mods to my 15 Tacoma and took them all off and sold them. I don’t plan on selling the 4Runner. I chose to have piece of mind after the 3 years or 36000 miles. I don’t regret taking the extended warranty.

The only problem with your thought process here is that more than likely you 17' PRO will not have ANY issues until well after 100,000 miles. I'm in my mid 50's and have wasted tons of $$$ on extended warranties in my younger years. If this Rig wasn't so freaking "bullet Proof" from the factory it might be wise to buy the extended warranty. You might have "peace of mind" but you wasted $$$ my friend.

Thanks for the input Mark, I’m in my mid 50’s also. That is why I said my wife told me I should not have takin it. She always seems to be right. But she did not fight me on this. Lol!!

I bought a Tundra a year ago and a 4Runner for my wife recently. These are my 1st Toyota’s. In the past I’ve driven Suburbans and Tahoe’s. I always bought the extended warranty but rarely used it. In each case I would’ve come out better just paying for the repairs out of pocket. My thought was that if I rarely if ever used it on a Chevy then it was with the gamble to pass on extended warranties for my Toyota’s.

    I don't take extended warranties.
Very rare you will use/need them, at least not so you come out ahead (to the tune of $2k). imho.

FWIW, my '05 will turn 13 this February. In that time, I've replaced fair wear and tear items (shocks/struts, calipers, wheel bearings, drive shafts, muffler) but never had a major issue where an extended warranty would have come into play. Just got back from a 2k mile trip into the woods of Canada and the truck ran like a swiss watch. For some, extended warranty's are peace of mind, but you own one of the most reliable vehicles on the road....take care of it and it will take care of you!

Stopped buying them years ago. I am waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of the game. EWs would have cost me over $5000 on three cars. Troy used to sell those EWs at less than 50% off. When one could get the best non-deductible "Platnium" service contract 6/100k for less than $1000. Troy Dietrich sold them. He still sells Fidelity Extended Service contracts at deep discounts ($850 for 7/70) otherwise $2000 is not worth it. Put that money in your account and use it for repairs later if needed. He sold them online for $100 over cost. Toyota kiboshed that so he now sells Fidelity ESCs (which is owned by South East Toyota distributors)

Troy still sells Extended Service contracts

    http://www.fidelitywarrantyservices.com/brochures/vehicle-protection

Fidelity Extended Service Contracts are administered by the owner of Southeast Toyota,

I would say a 7/70 for $900 or less I will buy. Over $900 and I will insure myself

It depends on where you live. South East Toyota sells Fidelity warranties (They OWN Fidelity so they can sell the vehicles AND make money on extended warranties (Service Contracts) The rest of the country sells Toyota Care ESCs which are not available in the SE.

Troy used to sell Toyota ESCs but Toyota put the kibosh on selling online ESCs. Honda tried to do the same but lost in court. No one has challenged Toyota yet. I trust Troys Fidelity ESC because it is administered by South East Toyota, THe ONLY way I would buy any ESC is discounted at less than $900 for 8/75K. I don't put the miles on so the time factor is best for me.

SO far I have not purchased the ESC though. I still have plenty of factory Warranty left at 2000

Not quite 3rd party as Fidelity is administered by SET SouthEast Toyota
Ask your dealer if they sell and will honor Fidelity.

Located at 500 Jim Moran Boulevard Deerfield Beach, FL 33442 www.fidelitywarrantyservices.com Florida License #60026

Jim Moran OWNS Southeast Toyota so he sells his own ESC in the SE.

Call Troy he knows more than I on this subject. Maybe he is back to selling Toyota Care ESCs again.

"We are a factory-authorized retailer for all of the makes listed below. We do NOT sell any 3rd party, or non-factory backed plans. Many people leave the dealership after a new vehicle purchase feeling a little overwhelmed. There is a lot of information to take in at one time, and we have found that a large number of people turn down the warranty or maintenance plans that were initially offered due to either the price that was quoted or because they needed time to think things over. If you are one them, be glad that you did!"

    Hello,

I'm about to buy a new 2018 TRD off road. I know they are going to try and sell me a warranty.

I guess my questions are is it worth it, any part of the truck I should be concerned with? Lastly if you purchased one what did you pay? I live on Long Island NY

    Thanks EB

I've never bought them and never regretted it from any maker. All vehicles today are generally made better and more reliable than years ago. Wife did buy the warranty with a Chevy Trailblazer she bought new years ago and that paid dividends but that vehicle was just a lemon from the get-go it ended up having issue after issue. With any "decent" brand Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Chevy you can be reasonably confident you'll be fine. My '18 Runner will never do more than have a dog in the back seat and tow a Wave Runner 1/4 mile to the launching ramp, seemed silly for me. Just my .02

This is an old thread, but one comment has not been made, which is one factor in my decision to buy an EC Toyota Warranty with my new 4 Runner - I likely won’t keep this vehicle beyond 3-4 years and having a bit of warranty helps sell it privately for the maximum price when the time comes. Purchasers of used vehicles all like the idea of a warranty and are willing to pay for it if it’s a hidden cost in the used vehicle purchase. Also, be mindful that although Toyota’s are bullet proof, and especially the 4 Runner, all premium vehicles use a lot of computers and touch screens, sensors, and other technology which is very expensive. Replacing even one of these items would pay for the extended warranty or a good part of it. Of course, it ultimately comes down to whether or not you need peace of mind, and can afford it and are willing to pay for it. It was a fairly easy decision for me - I pay cash for a vehicle, and sell the old one myself, usually at the high end of the market. An EC helps me with that process, and gives me a little peace of mind at the same time.

Let's say I get a new truck now. Can I still purchase an extended warranty for the same(ish) price when I get much closer to 3year/36k mile mark?

Alternately asked: if I had a truck now with 34k miles and 2.5 years on it, can I still buy an extended warranty?

It’s just money. You can’t take it with you.

For what it is worth. I know this post is old. I never take extended warranties on new vehicles. Except I decided to take it for my 2017 Pro. 10years or 100,000 miles. I can always transfer it to a new Toyota if I trade up. Not worried about the extra money I paid for it. But the platinum warranty covers it all.

No you cannot that's sort of equivalent to buying life insurance a week after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Everyone would do it and make out well not like it's really making out but you catch my drift.
