Installing TRD Roof Rack

No experience with the pro rack. I think removal of the factory rack bolts applies to all racks.

Carefully unscrew couple turns at a time moving around between bolts. You don't want to unscrew completely and have the plate under roof move so you can't attach new rack. If this happens I think the headliner needs to be removed to correct.

Use caution when prying off the roof rail caps. Fold over a towel or shirt a few times and lay it on the body next to the rail caps to help absorb the pressure from the leverage used to pry them off. That rounded portion of the body next to them dent rather easily.

 

I saw a video of somebody removing the caps by prying them away from the crossbars on the inside of the rack bars where the slot for the crossbars meets the cap- uses the rack bars as the fulcrum and not the roof. And don't use an impact driver or other power tool to remove the bolts- slow and steady, alternating a few turns for each bolt with a standard ratchet wrench.

 

I'm sure you already know this, but that rack is the weakest choice for carry loads. Thee are so many other options that easily double or triple the load capacity of it.

 

Amen. I saw a poster here who dented his roof. As you mentioned fold a towel and put the towel between the roof and the pry tool.

 

The part about switching between bolts when loosening them is spot on. Do a couple turns on one bolt then do a couple on the other side. Do 5x ratchet turns on each bolt until both bolts are out. I guess if you do one bolt at a time you run the risk of the “clip” falling down. Then you’re screwed. All the videos I’ve watched emphasize this point. Also make sure you use a towel folded when prying on the cap. For the cap you pry up not out to get it off. I saw a post here where someone didn’t use a towel and they dented the roof

 

I've had several racks on and off, but one other tip I would pass on is to get a few M8 threaded studs to put in the factory holes while you are messing around with whatever mounting point you are using.

 

You'll want to also make sure you have the brackets that go between the roof rack and the roof: part #63185-42020 (quantity: 4).

 

Resist the urge to over tighten

My JB Weld repair has held up great thus far.

 

Lol. That’s hysterical. I knew I saw it somewhere on this site where someone over tightened them. Glad to hear your JB weld is holding up. It really is good stuff.

 

I wish I read this sooner. I just purchased a 2024 trd off road. I wanted the trd pro rack and found one for cheap on FB market place. Watched a video of removal install. The video mentioned placing towel down ( which I did) but assumed it was for scratches not dents it’s a plastic cover after all. Anyway trd pro rack installed super easy. But roof now has small dents. No one would ever see them, but it want to see it they can be hammered out without a repaint. The paint is not cracked at all

on another note, does anyone know the torque specs and has anyone siliconed where the bikts mount for extra waterproofing?

Why do some want a Pro rack?

 

to be completely honest, it’s purely esthetics. If I didn’t get it cheap I would not have bothered.
