No lift reduced wheel size. Increased tire size. On 2022 limited

Toyota specialist in my area wants to do lift and put 285/70/17 on my 4R via Bilstein 5100. However, I asked the community and decided to keep oem suspension, and not so lift and go with smaller wheels and bigger tires. He claims he can do 285/70/17 with no lift but a small amount of trimming. The amount of tires available for 275/70/17 is pretty limited. However 265/70/17 is extensive. Thoughts on the two options now that I’ve decided not to lift?

265/70R17 is the stock tire size 4Runners come with (aside from the Limited). Nothing wrong with a stock tire size, but personally, I wish I'd gone slightly bigger. As long as a BMC isn't needed, I would be willing to do some plastic trimming to fit a 285/70R17, but my next tire will be a 255/80R17. The 255/80 is a true 33" tire, often a little over, like 33.3-33.4" (most 285/70's are slightly below 33") and shouldn't rub any more than a 285/70 does.

These are stock size (265/70R17's), with a 2" lift. Like I said, they will get the job done, but 33's look better on Tacos and 4Runners, IMHO.

Well, if you're reading it with your head tilted sideways, you're reading it right. :D (sorry, I couldn't resist).

PS- I know you've decided not to do a lift, but just as extra info, anything less than a 3" lift will make no difference on which tires will rub and which won't. You have to go higher than 3" for a lift to make a difference in rubbing. With my 2" lift, I will have to trim the exact same stuff that people with no lift will.

I would go with the 265/70/17 in the wheel of your choice. There's not a lot of benefit to going to 275, and 285s will probably rub and will also negatively affect your performance.

Do a Google Images search for 17" wheels/tires on 5th Gen Limited 4Runner. You'll be surprised how many you'll find.

Quite a few members on here have stated going to an all-terrain tire in the stock size vs. the stock street tires made a huge difference.

Personally, if I had a Limited, I'd also skip the lift, go with one of the stock 17" 4R wheels, or wheels with the same specs, 17" tires, and replace the Limited rocker panels.

Thanks...getting there...a bit more work doing it on the Limited but worth it...just added a dual battery system and a BudBuilt hidden winch mount and Ironman 9500...keeping that low key classy limited look ;-) 20221230_pearl-winch-1-2.jpg

I too would vote for 265/70R17 SL tires with no lift if you want to maintain the X-reas comfort. Not sure if you can go bigger with no lift.

Most of the tires in size 275/70R17 are Load E where you will loose on road comfort. Same story for 255/80R17 where everything is Load E. I've used Load E 275/70R17 in the past and will never do that mistake of running Load E on a 4runner again.

I got P285/70R17 SL tires on my Limited with a minor lift. I think I have seen people add spacer to stock Limited suspension to run bigger tires. I only had rubbing in the front and trimming front was easier than to trim TRD ORP. Since I use TRD Offroad wheels it helped less rubbing vs a wheel with more offset.

I know you like to keep without lift but this is mine with lift just to get an idea.

Looks like you've already settled on the 265s, which may be the best choice, but to answer your question you have to have a clear view of your mission, and it seems like you don't know that yet. If you want good looking tires you can go beefier and trim it out some. But you can also accomplish that with "standard" sized tires. And you can get very capable drive and handling from 265s (on and off road). And finally, I would never advocate replacing your XREAS with 5100s, that IMO is simply bad advice.

20” oem wheel is only 7” wide and 275 is not recommended. Some tire shops won’t even install them for liability purposes. I’m aware some folks have done it without issue. I considered the 275 myself before moving to 17” but didn’t want the liability or safety concerns.

285/70/17 with no lift. Your Toyota specialist is correct that you’ll need to do some persuading to make them fit though

    @4RP,
I wanted to chime in with my experience.
I am running LT 275/70-R17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W load range C tires on a set of TRD OR wheels. These tires start with a 18/32 tread depth, 3 peak rating, long warranty and diameter of 32.4 inches. The only mod I had to make to prevent rubbing at full lock was the Fender liner adjustment suggested by @kmeeg (thanks for that great video). I've had the tires on about 6 months and 7500 miles. About 750 of those miles have been offroad in Kentucky. My MPG has dropped from 17.6 to 17.4 according to the computer in those 7500 miles. I think its been an excellent trade off. For such great traction and taller sidewall with the C load rating.

There is not a lot of price difference between 265/70R17 and 275/70R17 either. For the Toyo's it was about $1 difference (except that the 275's are out of stock everywhere it seems).

Toyo seems to have only Load E option and 124 rate. Load E might give you a horrible ride comfort. Atleast I hate Load E ride comfort. I know some don't mind running Load E, but I'm very picky on my Load rating and the weight of the tire.
