Rear window button stopped working

i did a thorough search here, but couldn’t find a solution. I have a 2005 4Runner. The button on my dash that controls the rear window just stopped working. The window works fine with my key fob remote and it works when I roll the window up using my key in the tailgate lock, but the dash button won’t work. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Maybe a fuse?

This happened to me after I disconnected the battery for a while. My fix was to hold the button in the up position for 10 seconds.

 

Just remember, fuses don't just up and blow for no reason. If it is a fuse, don't be surprised it blows again at some point.

Rear hatches, if used a lot, get breaks in the wiring harness that can cause shorts or non-working buttons.

I really REALLY doubt it's a fuse. A blown fuse is going to disable the entire circuit and the window won't work no matter what you try. Anything else on that circuit won't work either.

Depending on where that button goes, and what controls the window from that button, it could be a few things. Could be the button, a relay between the button and the window, and all the wiring.

I would first figure that the button has gone bad. Then from there if the button connects through the harness at the back of the car, I would test where the wires go from the body to the tail gate.

 

Interesting fix. That tells me the button may go through the computer and needed relearning?

 

Thanks everyone. I’ll try jiveydude’s suggestion and if it doesn’t work, I’ll go to a mechanic. I am famous for breaking things when I get out my screwdriver and pliers.

 

Its a 17yo switch. KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. The most logical explaination is usually the correct one. Pull the rocker switch and check the connection.

KISS is a common acronym\phrase. He wasn't really calling you stupid. It might seem that way if you've never heard of KISS.

 

Again, showing your age. Its an old military adage. Did you check your switch?

 

Check the FUSE!...there is a circuit between the front switch and the rear one. Just because it works from the rear, does not mean it's not a fuse.

I offered help, used a common term used for generations to help explain your situation. You got butt hurt becasue it was a term you had never heard of before. Fair enough. I and others explained it and the hurt continued. I am a complicated guy, but as others pointed out, there was nothing wrong with what I said.

Sure, always worth a check, but it would be odd if a fuse works like that.

When a fuse blows, NOTHING works on that circuit anymore. I don't see how, in this case, that it's a fuse unless that button is on a separate circuit from the motor. And if a fuse is blown, usually, many things are not working. Only other thing would be an in-line fuse for only that switch, and that would be nutty.

the same exact thing just happened to me and it's the stupidest thing. It worked just fine and roll down w/ Key fob but couldn't roll it up until I push the unlock button on the driver side door that unlocks and locks apparently ALL the windows. Problem Solved

 

You’re right, the window lock feature includes the rear window inside switch. Never knew that but just found it in the manual. That was probably the OP’s issue too. Wonder if he ever figured it out?
