I've heard of this other forum before.

Luckily, bullies and assholes don't seem to last around here.

That's not to say that I haven't had my own asshole moments here.

Yeah, that site gives off "grumpy old man" vibes. Half the responses are "learn to use the search box/function". Not really a friendly atmosphere.

While I agree its good form to do your own research, I join forums for the information along with the "back and forth" with other owners. Like shooting the breeze with @Thatbassguy about music.

I'm on a banjo forum (big surprise, eh?), and a lot of the new members are retirees who are not often adept with technology. They struggle with loading pictures, posting MP3s, etc. I feel bad when the first replies to their posts are jerks with know-it-all and condescending responses.

On the flip side, its also annoying going thru all the effort to help out a newbie, only for them to disappear without even a thank you. I've spent countless hours tabbing out tunes for other banjo players, only for them to take the info and run, never to be heard from again.

 

My wife drives about 4K a year and I drive 30K with a free company truck, who drives what is not too much of a decision for our "forever" vehicle. I do have to fight a little over the mods. She preferred the wide running boards over the sliders, The 3"/1.5" lift made it harder for her to get in. Thank God she fell into the seat and did not get hurt when the jump handle snapped off in her hand. I would have never heard the end of it.

 

Is that the site that requires a weapons-grade pop up blocker to use?

I wouldn't even say that people buy a Pro because they don't know how to do mods. I'm getting a Pro because I wanted all the options. I want every bell and whistle I can get. If someone sees it as an ORP with an upgraded suspension, then you have a point. But I wanted dual climate, upgraded audio, etc etc. And hell, I like the red stitching in the seats.

 

Or joining up with local forum members to discover a whole new off-roading hobby you never knew was missing in your life!

I would have still had the 4runner, but without @Thatbassguy I’d be cruisin the mall parking lots looking for snow piles. I mean, I still do that, but poking around endless national forest trails is a nice addition lol

Exactly. I had never been to an Old-Time Music jam before I joined the music forum. But a local member invited me out to join their group, and it really helped build up my confidence playing tunes I had never heard of in front of a live audience. Of course, a few beers helped loosen up my nerves!

 

Anywho, back on topic. I was originally looking to get an ORP, but I found a Pro at a fantastic price point. But had I bought an ORP, I would modded it to look like a Pro, because, I like the way it looks.

Then they added the dual zone climate control, and a Pro became my 1st choice if I could have found one at MSRP.

The handle that broke being the folding flimsy one above the driver and passenger doors?

You can replace them with a fixed one like the FJCs had. Or add an A pillar handle to the drivers side. However, the instructions for these mods are on the “other” forum.

 

My wife really likes the FJ handles, the T nuts made them very easy to install (5 minutes each total, including removing the old handles). Although I am 6'3" only my hair hits them getting in and out. I have Jason's custom bracket and the A pillar handle and might do that this weekend. The Pro model should have the driver side A pillar handle included!

 

For sure, im just going off of the arguments I have heard from the bigoted. Heck, I wish I had red stiched seats lol.

In the end, everyone is an individual and as long as they are not imposing their will on someone else should do whatever the heck they want,

 

8k difference in base price. Upgraded suspension, wheels, and tires. A bunch of exterior aesthetic upgrades. Auto headlights, dual zone climate, upgraded audio, standard sunroof and MTM... I mean, there's quite a bit for $8k. A reasonable person could think those upgrades aren't worth it, but I wouldn't call it a cash grab. That's why they make lower trims, for those who don't think the Pro is a good deal.

I got Jason's custom bracket and the oem handle from Toyota last year and installed the DS grab handle. You won't be disappointed with that mod!

Did you do the FJ solid grab handles on all 4 doors, or just the front? I'm still mulling that one over...

 

Because Toyota refuses to provide 3rd row seats in the pro. When there should be no big deal in having them.

 

I just did the front jump handles, the back has the slider kick out and is easier to step up on.

@mynameistory, I mean it's not wrong a statement lol, there is some truth to it. All the engineering/tooling for the 5th gen was done well over a decade ago, and we are basically swapping parts in off the shelf at this point to differentiate/create trims/upgrade them. Toyota is printing money with the 4Runner. Really can't wait until the next gen debut. I think we might get a bit of an insight this next week with the new sequoia design language.

That said to each their own. If you want a Pro, great! If you want to make your rig into a Pro, great! A 4Runner is a 4Runner. Get what makes you happy.

Just be glad that A) it hasn't gone the way of the land cruiser, and that we have a good enthusiast community and a decent forum here. (The "other" forum has gone to the dogs due to poor management amongst other things...)

But, If we start slapping TRD PRO on a Rav4 or Corolla cross, then we need to have a serious discussion...

 

I’m legit scared of what the 6th gen is going to look like. They freaking nailed the 5th gen and I think it’ll forever be one of the best body styles of any suv. This was actually a big reason I wanted the 2022 since it could be the last year.

 

I'm not scared. Toyota isn't going to completely change a formula that by all measurements is working for them. Yes it will be a new platform based on TNGA-F, new sheet metal, etc. but the DNA of the vehicle won't change. With the LC now gone, the new sequoia most likely moving up market some to help fill the gap of the LC price range, I wouldn't be surprised if the 6th gen moves up market a bit. I bet the next gen starts at around 45K (Which I'm not going to be happy about).

That said, @Brawwp I think you are right. The 5th gen will become like the 3rd gen long term. It seems like only the odd generation 4Rs become the long term keeps. I'm going to patiently wait and see how things shape up for the 23MY 4Runner. We might see another year of the 5th gen if rumors hold true that the Prado/4Runner is delayed till 24MY. Maybe we will finally get dual zone climate control and heated/cooled seats on the premium trims (Really the only parts left to scrape off the shelf and add at this point besides parking sensors.)

I will compare the 6th gen to what I see and know in the 5th gen, and either trade in my 16 SR5 for the last of year of the 5th and hold onto it till the wheels fall off. If the next gen hits it out of the park, then that changes the math. We will know when Toyota wants us to know.

 

For sure. Look at the new Tundra. They seem to be heading toward the Lexus grilles.

I love my '19, and have been saying that I'm keeping it forever. But, if they really nail it, and the fuel economy gets an improvement similar to the Tundra, I'll be very tempted to trade up.

I doubt it's going to look bad. Like @Old Red said, they're not going to ruin a good thing.

 

Funny enough, I didn't like the looks of the 5th gen immediately. Took a while to grow on me.

 

I think this is the real cause of the delay. Why rush to release gen 6 when the current truck is completely amortized and making cash hand over fist? It has remarkably few updates in its 12 years of production and yet the numbers won't stop going up.
