Air Compressor/Inflator for the 4Runner

Im looking at the four compressors below and would appreciate any user feedback. I've got stock sized Falken Wildpeaks and will be doing plenty of airing down through the fall and into the winter.

The VIAIR's, of course, have great reviews here and Ive seen a few for the Smitty as well, though not much on the Ironman. Ive included Ironman because their ship is 15 minutes from home and their price competitive with coupons available to bring the price down further.

I believe the Ironman is a rebranded Smitty.

 

Not on your list but I have a Viair88P, used it once, it seems like a good quality portable compressor.

Your right, the Viair get pretty good reviews online.

 

I’d just pick the one with the best warranty. I have ARB on board so can’t comment on those. But I will say if you plan on getting bigger tires and wheeling, spring for ARB twin compressor

 

I have the Viair 300P. It gets my 295/70/17's from 20 PSI up to 35 PSI in about 2 minutes apiece. I'm totally satisfied with it. For stock size tires, it should be more than sufficient. I would absolutely buy it again.

I'm also looking at the 440p. It does have the highest CFM of all the viair portables. Anyone have experience with this unit?

Very pleased at the performance of the Smitty 2781. Many air up cycles on 275/70/17 this summer, worked flawlessly. 188.00 on Amazon.

 

Definitely Viair out of those. I have a 450P.

 

You have to buy it only once, get best of the best out there. Here is my with 1 gallon air tank under mounting plate:

 

I also have the Viair88P. Works for me. It’s light and small enough to easily stash in the back where it stays clean.

 

Best flow rate and duty cycle should be the determining factor

 

It looks like it has roughly 1/3 more output than the 300p. I'm using a 300p on 295's and it's been great so far. If you're going bigger with tires, or just want it to work faster, it seems like the 440 will be fantastic.

The ARB twin looks great if money is no object, and if you want to mount your compressor. But, the OP seems to be looking for a portable compressor.

 

I looked at the specs of the 300 and 400 Viairs and am a little confused at what differs between the models. They seem to have the same duty cycle and airflow cfm. What differentiates the models then?

 

I noticed that when I was looking to buy mine. I can't recall if I found any difference between the 2 other than price.

Edit: I was curious... The 400p can achieve higher output at 24 volts. So, nothing useful unless you plan on running dual batteries.

 

I have this exact same setup. Really enjoy my ARB. I also have the single as well that I have in my wife’s van. It is cool that you can run pneumatic tools with the dual ARB compressor and the one gallon tank.

Yes both of these are higher priced than vivair but honestly buy once cry once (in my case I bought twice and cried twice). But in all seriousness the single sold me on the double. I filled up 4 of my tires and put everything away and my neighbor was only on his second tire (I went all the way up to 55-60 psi and he was going to 45). I pulled everything back out and had filled up his 4th tire and he just was getting to his 3rd tire. Offered to do his 3rd tire as well to get done faster. We both are running 34” tires (285/75/17).

 

The ability to run air tools is a incentive for sure. I wonder if I could adapt a 'bail-out' bottle as a mounted tank since I don't dive anymore.. It's a Al30 (30cf), out of vis and hydro inspection. I hate to see it unused.
Anybody got thoughts on feasibility?

285/70/17's (assuming LT) should be run at 35 on our 4Runners.

Also, which Viair was your neighbor using? The ARB has great output, but I'm not having any issues with 295's and a Viair 300p.

 

Portable compressors with automatic shutoff come into play when moving from tire to tire, and when checking tire pressure in the middle of a tire fill. A typical portable compressor must be turned off between tire fills, and anytime you want to check tire pressure. If you aren’t near the compressor, this can turn into running laps back and forth to the portable compressor to turn the unit on and off. Automatic portables do not work in this fashion and will save you time & effort to get tires inflated quickly

 

Sorry my post might have been misunderstood. Idk if he was running Viair pump or just a cheap autozone pump. I did ride with a guy that had a Viair pump and it seemed to run good but that is my only experience.
Yep running 55-60 psi:

 

The sidewall shows maximum inflation at maximum load. 55 is WAY too high for our trucks.

Thay ARB twin seems like a great option for those looking to do an onboard mounted compressor. Looking at the specs, it has very good output.

 

Oh I might go drop the tire pressure now to 40.

I really like it. I considered an onboard compressor, but really like the portability of that viair.

 

This is a good tool to find the recommended tires pressure for oversized tires. I know some people prefer to run a little higher or a little lower than the recommended pressure but it is a good starting point

 

I have the 400P Auto and like it, although the gauge is slightly off. I may see if Viair will replace it. I replaced the battery connectors with a plugin connector. Overall I don't spend too much time bringing up to standard pressure from 15psi. I do not have anything to compare with however.

 

Something for the DIY GUYS. Turning a pump on and off without having to go to it is possible. Replace the on/off switch(low volt/amp) with one of these(two wires in & two wires out). Have been using them(where needed)for years.

My solution was to make my own hose, putting the gauge right at the compressor. I still have to flip it off to check the gauge, but it saved me a bunch of running around.
