To an earlier poster, the Maverick is definitely being made in Mexico, it is being made in same plant as the baby Bronco (Bronco Sport).

Only the Ranger and the regular new Bronco to come will be made in the USA in Wayne Michigan.

It definitely seems like there would be a market segment for this but based on the quality out of Ford of Mexico before I would be leary for a while. If you wanted to lease it while under 3/36 no worries but not sure I would buy it outright.

I was wondering to myself why this car resonates so much with me, a guy who’s never felt the need for a pickup and who’s generally avoided American cars due to quality issues.

Then it hit me. I’m having like a freaking panic attack over the possibility of having to resume a long commute, and the pressure that would create to get a “sensible” (i.e soul crushing) commuter car. The Maverick represents the possibility of some fun and extra utility, and something that’s different, while being just as cheap and fuel efficient as a typical commuter econo box. My hunch is a lot of other people are gonna feel the same way.

That said, if I absolutely had to get an inexpensive and efficient commuter I’d prob try first for something sporty. Maybe the new BRZ / 86? A base model should be under 30k. Unfortunately, there are very few choices like that. Maybe a GTI? A Civic Si? Hmmmm

Keep in mind it STARTS at 19,995 if you want it with a motor and steering wheel you'll be looking at 28,000.

That’s not really fair. You can spec it with the more powerful motor, real trans and AWD for about 26k. And the 20k version undercuts the price of a lot of FWD/CVT econo boxes out there — while delivering a very impressive MPG.

EDIT: just looked it up. You can spec the XL model (steelies) with the better engine, real trans, AWD and Tow Package for $25,540.

You can get a short cab short box 2WD F150, which is an actual truck, in the mid-20s.

Which is a great option for some people. Like tradesmen who need a larger bed and tougher platform. The Maverick isn’t aimed at them. No one is remotely saying that the Maverick is designed for such consumers.

I'd argue this is one of the times where the name is 100% on par, instead of their usual swing and a miss.

Who would want some thing that is not particularly good at being a car or a truck?

Any recommendations for those who don’t particularly always need a mpg focused commuter car, nor a 4x4 / awd truck with a bed……. for less than $30k?

True, that's how Ford operates. They'll have a "Gen 2" out in like 3-4 years with a whole new set of gremlins.

If you need a good truck, you can get a 4x4 four-cylinder Tacoma SR for less than $30,000.

If you need just a truck, the big three will sell you a rear wheel drive real truck they can haul and tow for less than $30,000.

There are dozens of crossovers from all the Japanese manufacturers if you need something that can haul passengers and cargo.

I just don’t see a need for something that is neither a passenger nor a cargo hauler like the Maverick.

It'd be interesting to see Ford's market research on this. They obviously believe they've identified a significant group of consumers who will see the Maverick filling their needs.

Are there a lot of consumers who'd value having a bed -- eg for garden supplies, bikes, outdoor playthings, supplies for home improvement projects, etc. etc. etc. etc. -- but who don't need the extra capabilities of a traditional pickup?

Presumably Ford has researched that. I've seen car mag reviewers talking about how they'd personally like something along those lines, and neither need nor want a big heavy truck with bad MPG. There must be at least some others like them. One would assume that Ford has an idea of how big this market segment is.

Regardless, my hunch is that Ford is also looking at another group of buyers: people whose first priority is cheap transportation (both price and MPG) but who would value the extras that the Maverick brings. This group might be larger than the first one. These are the people who used to buy the Focus or Fusion and their equivalents from other brands.

What seems to be getting lost here is that the Maverick does not have to be a "real" pickup truck to add value for people who would otherwise buy small inexpensive sedans. It's got a bed -- something no econobox or family sedan has. It's got good ground clearance -- something they also don't have. It's got the option of AWD and 4000 pounds of towing -- something they either don't have or don't have at the same price.

It seems pretty simple really. The Maverick is for people who use a bed but don't need the hauling and towing capacity of a traditional pickup, along with its poor MPG. And for people who'd rather have a bed, good ground clearance (and maybe AWD) than an econobox that costs the same and gets about the same MPG.

To put things in perspective, if you plan on actually using a truck for truck things you need at least a 6 foot bed. Shorter beds that you sometimes see with four-door pick up trucks bought by urban cowboys are of limited utility.

I really would like to see what kind of crap prospective buyers of this thing would put in the tiny little open cargo space.

I agree completely. Only option that I see would be a hard tonneau as to have a large trunk. Then, might as well get something else. :notsure:

Time will tell. Will be interesting to see how it gets used in the real world. But here are some of the specs about what it can do:

Payload capacity of 1500 pounds. So whatever you can fit in a 4.5' bed that weighs up to 1500 pounds.

Bed extends to 6 feet in length with tailgate down, for stuff that's longer than 4.5’ (but narrow enough to fit between the wells).

    Tailgate can support 400 pounds.

A stack of 4x8s will fit on top of the wheel wells and supported by the tailgate, which can be positioned level with the top of those wells.

    Agreed.

I miss my 98 Tacoma, as well. I also had 4 2nd gens and loved them all. But that 98 was just a perfect size. And there wasn’t anything I could do with my 2nd gens that I couldn’t with my first. I did “truck stuff” with all of them.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
It's a Bronco Sport aka Ford Escape with a bed. No thanks.
    Tiny interiors.

Didn't Subaru already do this 15 years ago with the Baja? Yeah that was a hot seller.

So although I was being sarcastic I was close! Something that "most people" would probably want would be 25,000 - 28,000 yeah still not terrible money I'll give you that! I love watching car and driver on tv when they test a new model. They always say "base price is 30,000 sticker price as tested was 42,000."

Totally. The "advertised base price" is so often misleading. Important to do the actual math. For example, the Maverick naysayers on this thread (and I get it BTW, it's neither a "real" truck nor a normal sedan or crossover, and I can see how that might offend some people) have been doing apples-to-oranges on the pricing issue to downplay how much the Maverick brings to the table relative to other options. If you don't like the Maverick you don't like it, fine, I doubt I'd ever buy one myself, but let's try to be objective here.

For example, it'd cost more than 30K to get the stripped Tacoma SR with tiny Access Cab and 4WD -- and that's with the 4 cyl that has waaay less power than the 2.0 turbo in the AWD Maverick that costs less than 25K. If you spec the Tacoma engine with similar HP and torque as the Maverick, then you're over 33K. Similar story with the base model F150, which is 35K and has the additional issue of being a two seater. Then there's the cost of the extra gas those trucks burn.

For those who have trouble holding opposing thoughts in their heads at the same time, the above observations do NOT of course mean that it'd be dumb to get the 30K or 33K Tacoma or 35K F150 over the Maverick. Those are serious trucks with a lot of capability. For some users it would actually be dumb to spend less on the Maverick instead of more on the Tacoma or F150, cause while they saved a ton of money they wouldn't get what they actually needed.

The point is simply that the reverse is also true. For some people, it would be dumb to spend several thousands more (plus a lot more on top of that for gas) for Tacoma and F150 capabilities that they'll never, ever need. For some people, the Maverick fits their needs better than anything else. This is my main point. It's gonna be a hit cause it's gonna work better for a lot of people than other options now in the market.

Just trying to be objective. When Ford sells a zillion of these, the fact of this vehicles' value to a lot of people will be clear to those who don't "get it" now.

(Edited to be address Doubleduty's point below)

Just read that Ford took more than 40,000 pre orders for the Maverick in the week after it was announced. Guess people like it lol.

Same article said the Bronco is now sold out for two years.

I was not expecting that! 40k in the first week is surprising to me but people also love new and shiny, always wanting to be the first to own something.

I am not surprised the Bronco is sold out though.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Maybe they just want what is now being offered to cater to them instead of the years of not being catered to with other vehicles. Is anyone going bananas over the relaunched Kia K5? That's a nice little Asian sedan in a sea of nice little Asian sedans. Where were you getting your small pickups and reasonably priced non-crossover off roaders? Not a lot of places until Ford came along and jumped on the market opportunity.

(Yeah, the Bronco Sport is a crossover, but considering the amount of confusion surrounding it and the upcoming regular Bronco, the fact that it's a crossover probably doesn't matter when people aren't associating it with being a crossover. And if you get a trim with the best off road tech, the Bronco Sport is leaps and bounds ahead of its crossover competition in terms of performance.)

Following up on my previous thought, much respect to the 4Runner, God knows I like mine, but it would not have been my first choice if my tastes were being catered to by a smaller vehicle. If my Jeep Liberty lasted just a few more years or the real new Bronco came out a few years earlier, I would have definitely been driving a new Bronco by now. The only thing on the market that really ticked most of the boxes is the Wrangler, but we all know why I didn't get a Wrangler. And while the new 2 door Bronco might not tick the small and lightweight box that my old Wrangler TJ did back in the mid 00s or even my Liberty to a lesser extent in the late 00s, it still would have been preferable to the 4Runner in terms of overall size.

But now I'm stuck with a totally badass 4Runner that might outlive me even though I'm 35. Woe is me. What ever will I do?

I don’t disagree. I think it’s a great move. I said it earlier in the thread, I just didn’t expect that high of a number. I’m happy there is a small truck coming I to the market.

The new Maverick and Bronco are both made in Mexico. Is that any better than tires made in China? ( just comparing to another thread ).

When I worked for Ford the Fusions built in Mexico (Hermosillo) had superb quality...around 1100 defects per 1000 vehicles which was as good as any car made (Camry was about same) and 1/3 the defects of Chryslers or Mercedes. Ford treated the workforce well (including free bus service and lunch) and people appreciated their jobs and built a good product. People seem pretty happy with their iPhones built in China too.
