    I'm actually much more interested in the upcoming Z than I am about the BMW Supra. I intend to own a Z within a few years.

    Nissan has made some excellent cars. I just think they make some really ugly cars, too (cough.. Juke..cough).

    The 3.0 in the 2nd gen 4runners was known to have head gasket issues, which I'm sure ultimately led to your cracked head. I am a little surprised about the transmission failure, though.

    I've heard mixed things about that motor. If it's the same one they use in the eco-deco-diesel Rams, I believe they had some quality issues when they couldn't build them fast enough to meet demand.

    Yes, the head gasket was the culprit. I was surprised about the transmission(s) too. And, I agree with you on Nissan’s styling. Pretty horrific over the past 20 years except for a few models here and there.

    The Z has my interest too...

    Exact opposite experience. My girlfriend has a 2018 Rogue with 30k miles and it is the biggest POS Nissan I've seen. AWD system failures, electronics failures, Nav system bugs, etc.

    Reliability ratings put it at barely above average...

    I was kicking around the idea of a 1/2-ton pickup and found some amazing deals on Nissan Titans with the Cummins motor. I went to the Titan forums and you would not believe the problems these trucks have. Absolute garbage on every level.

    Friend of mine at work bought one. Paid $29k for a brand new diesel pickup. Within a week, he had problems with the TPMS system and the Nav system.

    Nissans are generally garbage these days, from what I've seen and heard.

    It's possible that this could be a bit out of proportion. If you read the 3rd gen section on Tacomaworld, you'd probably think those are garbage, too.

    Also, it seems that newer diesels in general are finicky at best. The DEF thing seems to really screw up the works. Diesel is really only a good option for people who put on a lot of miles and/or need the power for towing. DEF vehicles don't seem to do well in the city.

    I had a bmw X5 diesel for 6 years (3.0 I6). They do require much more maintenance than their gas siblings but j don't think it meant unreliable. My DPF never had sn issue over 111k miles. The rest of the system are wear items: NOX sensors, SCR, EGR, and DEF tanks/pumps. I had to replace nox sensors every 40-50k miles (warranty to 120k miles), the active def tank temperature sensor went out and the fix is tank replacement. Again, thank God for VW dieselgate (bmw doesn't cheat) but because Germans were in the spotlight - BMW got ahead of the game and extended any emissions problem to be covered up to 120k miles.

    Otherwise it was a extremely reliable vehicle. Over 6 years and 111k miles only having a couple exhaust problems I think is pretty good. My biggest complaint was it eats tires and needs replaced every year.

    You cannot do the following to modern diesel engines.

    Idle... AT ALL except in traffic.

    Short trips or conditions where the engine doesn't reach operational temperature

    Tuning without deleting the DPF

    I think we agree here. What I was trying to say was that I think some folks buy diesels for running around in the city, and the newer diesels don't seem to like it. I feel like some of the negativity towards newer diesels comes from people who shouldn't have bought a diesel.

    Some of the negativity towards diesels lies at the feet of Volkswagen. The rest is it’s particulate problem, which is carcinogenic. Road corridor studies show adverse health effects just living in the corridor and inhaling the plume, let alone walking down the sidewalk inhaling idling vehicles. I have to say I’ve breathed my share, in farm machine storage buildings hooking up tractor implements and servicing machines with the engines running inside the shop without modern ventilation. Back in the good old days.

    I miss the torque, A LOT. Not worrying about maintenance on the exhaust is totally worth it.

    After its 2017 redesign, the Nissan Titan got solid road-test scores from Consumer Reports testers. However, this model never inspired confidence on the reliability front.

    Problem areas included auxiliary engine components (belts, pulleys, mounts) and body integrity (leaks, cracks). These issues kept Titan down among the worst pickups following the latest survey.

    On a scale of 1-100, Titan’s predicted reliability for 2019 was 28%. Stacked against the competition, that put Nissan’s truck well behind Ford and Ram 2500 models and completely out of Toyota Tundra’s league.

    Nissan made a very good compact truck for years and years and a few good truck based SUVs. The Frontier and its predecessor (the hardbody i think it was called) were really solid trucks. The Pathfinder use to be good too until it went unibody. Xterra was good. No doubt they had some stinkers in there though. The Titan has always been a POS.

    I can’t tell if this was supposed to be sarcasm, or not but BMW got hit with fines for “accidentally” running “defective” software on their diesels due to “lax oversight and insufficient quality control” that made them non compliant with emissions standards. But technically you’re correct in that it was not officially deemed to be fraud.

    I didn't think so. I paid $37k for my SR5 4Runner with a couple of add-ons. The comparable Bronco to it is the Big Bend 4dr, which starts at $35,800. The next step up is the Black Diamond, which starts at $38,500.

    But, if you start adding goodies like the Sasquatch package and the 2.7 Eco-Boost with 310hp and 400 ft lbs of torque, then the price jumps to $47k. Typically with domestics, you can knock a few thousand off MSRP, but with the Bronco, you can bet they will go for full MSRP for at least a couple of years.

    Base price is fine yeah, but I feel like people will want the off road goodies, bigger engine, remote start, keyless entry and all those sky rocket the price. Once it climbs over 50k, without knowing it’s reliability it makes me want to get my 4runner even more. I was interested in them in the beginning, but not at those price points.

    I just priced one out. For the same basic setup as my ORP, MSRP was about $2K higher than mine was in 2019.

    You can't really compare 4runner pricing to a bronco with features not even available or comparable to what we have.

    The 2.3 EB base motor makes more power than our V6, so that is the motor we should be pricing out. The 2.7 is a massive power upgrade from our 4.0, so it's not fair to compare pricing with it.

    The Sasquatch package also is a huge upgrade that can't be compared with a 4runner. Not any trim of 4runner can even FIT 35's, let alone come with them from the showroom.

    I think the pricing is pretty damn good for what you're getting.

    Out of curiosity, I added the big motor and Sasquatch package. STILL CHEAPER than a TRD PRO!

    I’m not a fan of the (in my opinion) over priced pro, so to me getting a 4runner under 40k is where my mindset is at.
    Also, I know it’s overplayed but it’s just not a proven reliable platform yet like the 4runner is, so the value isn’t there for me. It’s like a jeep right now, cool and capable sure, but what am I looking at in repairs after 50k miles lol.
    I priced a badlands edition with the Sasquatch package, keyless entry, remote start, 4 door, engine block heater, and floor liner and it came out pretty spendy.

    I agree. I payed under $39k for an ORP with KDSS, and now have a way more capable rig than a Pro. And, I probably still haven't surpassed PRO MSRP.

    But, the Sasquatch package is a WAY better upgrade than the PRO. you're getting 35's from the factory!

    I'm not buying one. I'm just pointing out that based on equipment and specifications alone, these things are priced pretty well.

    This is equipped and capable WAY beyond any 4runner available. It's like taking a PRO, adding everything a limited has, and then adding stuff we can't even get on a 4runner.

    And, adding a supercharger to get ALMOST as much power as the 2.7 EB, Lmao!

    And, it's STILL not much more than a PRO!

    Late 2 cents - I had 2 Titans, 2005 LE and 2008 LE, that had zero issues. ‘05 got hit head on by someone running a red and my daughter and I walked out. She said she only wanted me to get another Titan and never felt safe in a car again. That 05 had ~280k miles on it. The 08 was better, but I traded it in for the FJ for my daughters first vehicle (eventually). Brother had a pathfinder and dad had a frontier, no real issues, but we all migrated over here after my brother got his first taco.

    To me, for an unproven vehicle in regards to reliability, it’s a lot lol. Pretty much a keep at this point.

    Motor and tranny have been around for years now in the F150 and other vehicles.
    I am sure there will be gremlins that pop up though being a first year rig.
    I am not expecting Toyota longevity however and will get an extended warranty.
    I just couldn't deal with the dog of the 4Runner motor up mountain passes loaded out any longer. I have other reasons too, but I not trying to justify my move to you, so I'll leave it at that.

    myself, I prefer the 2 door.....eons ago, I owned a '71 bronco...3 sp on the tree...302 V8. very spartan. no carpet. steel floors and dash. loved it...sadly, it fell victim to lots of rust. sold it. In 1995, bought me a 1990 Isuzu Trooper. 2.8 v6. 5 sp. Loved it. despite being under powered. it was a great early SUV. towards the end, before I finally sold it, PARTS were getting harder and harder to locate. I finally sold it to a fellow trooper fanboy...and used the proceeds to purchase a '97 4 runner...kept the Trooper 25 yrs...before getting out.

    Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
    I went with the base 2 door standard 4X4 (not Big Bend, couldn't justify it because the only thing that really appeals to me is the interior you can wash out with drain plugs and while that is really good it's not worth the thousands in increased price to me), loaded it up with some features, notably the V6 (because if I'm going to be forced to get a turbo, I'm going for a V6 because it should hold up better) and the Sasquatch Package, and it comes out to $39,365. Not a small chunk of change, but still a fantastic value compared to a 4Runner, especially since it has functional off road tech like the front locker that not even the 4Runner's offered with. I didn't load it up with creature comforts, either. I went hardcore in functional off road stuff.

    I'd be crazy to give up my new 4Runner for a Bronco. The 4Runner's going to hold up possibly for decades, and it's still plenty capable. I do have an SR5, but I can always get an aftermarket rear locker down the line. Still, that's impressive of Ford. Damn impressive. All that off road tech at a price that's comparable to my SR5 4X4 and blows away the TRD Pro. If my Jeep held out for a few more years, I'd definitely be in the market for a Bronco instead of a 4Runner. Other automakers should take note of what's going on here. The only thing that remains to be seen is if the Bronco is going to go the way of the FJ Cruiser in popularity.

    Personally, I hope the Bronco is finally what gets Fiat-Chrysler to remove the stick from their butts and make genuinely dependable vehicles, especially Wranglers, but let's face it. Even though I'd love to have an actually dependable Wrangler again, the Bronco might have just made the Wrangler obsolete except for the niche of the niche that actually require the solid front axle. Oh, and the base Bronco has air conditioning and talks to fruits, robots, and Sputniks. The base Wrangler is lucky it has an AM radio and a coupon for a cool breeze on a hot day in July in Arizona that expired 666 years ago.
