Engine Air Filter

In your opinion, what would be the best engine air filter for a 5th gen 4Runner SR5 ?

 

I hear about K & N performance filter but as far as I know it is not all positive as it requires more maintenance due to it's oily characteristic. Sure maybe oil traps more dust. But at the same time, it gets dirty a lot faster. Also K & N claims to add more power to the engine. Well, that is not a concern at all to me. Therefore, I will do like you and stick to the Genuine Toyota regular filter ... unless someone can convince me with another product. I always keep an ear out for people's opinion ... and FACTS if possible. Thanks.

 

BTW, how often do U change the filter (kms) ?

 

Best to change it when it is dirty, mileage really doesn’t matter.

If you never drive on anything other than pavement I would change it every time you change your oil. If you off-road and are stuck behind people then I change mine every 3-5k miles depending how much dust the engine ate.

Pro S dry= no oil, reusable, easy to clean, less expensive than buying a new one every year.

when you mention changing filter every 3-5k miles, you are referring to the engine OIL filter, right ?
I was asking about engine AIR filter ...

 

Toyota owners manual says every 30k, depends on your driving habits, if your driving dusty fire roads or out in the desert then you would change it my frequently.

I don't like to change/replace parts for no good reason as the part is still in good running order.

Yes I replace my engine AIR filter that often when I off road in dry dusty conditions. Every tine I change it it’s gunked in dirt. Sounds like you don’t hit anything but the pavement so you’re good.

 

When you do change the engine air filter, does any of you notice a change of any kind at all (i.e. performance, fuel consumption, etc) ?

 

If you notice a change in performance, you were late in changing your air filter, way late.

I change my air filter at every oil change at 5000 miles, but I drive off road in dusty conditions every day.

 

I think I will install a Cold Air intake. That way I can see the filter and clean or replace as necessary.

 

Does installing CAI require engine tuning adjustments ?

 

You don't have to do anything when you use a CAI, although I believe most tuners will ask if you have a CAI. I used a tuner to correct my speedometer on my jeep due to tire size, and it asked the question.

You can try K&N filter. It is providing quality product.

 

I looked into the possibility of going with a K&N filter.
Unfortunately, even though it has it's advantages, it also has many disadvantges.
Considering everything specific to my personal situation, I finally chose to stick with TOYOTA OEM.

OEM Toyoata intake is already COLD AIR Intake. Other than silencers and reservoirs in it's tubing it is not a bad intake. As for filter - you can't go wrong by sticking with original Toyota part.

 

Great thinking. I couldn't figure out why oem was not cold air. It is !!
And yes, can't go wrong with oem parts to keep everything in balance.

 

I go with whatever local parts store has in stock and change my air filter every time I change the oil. It is extremely dry and dusty in CA during the summertime so I don't mind changing it more often.
