I’ll be installing a Sherpa Crestone roof rack on my 5th gen rig this weekend. Viewing their install video on YouTube doesn’t show them sealing the mounting bolts with anything other than the rubber block and their washer with the rubber seal. I was wondering if any of you who have this rack, applied silicone anyway, or just relied on their mounting material? I tend to over kill with things like this. Thanks.

I didn't use any sealant when using their blocks with my Westcott Rack, I'm also in the desert and not super concerned. If you're somewhere with lots of rain, maybe, but I don't think it's necessary

If anything the desert is as bad as anywhere else because we get crazy hard and heavy storms. I just did a little marine urethane adhesive sealant (it doesn't dry out over time or shrink nearly as much as silicone) around the hole before I added the spacers for peace of mind. The most common leak is from pooled water in the drip rails so that should take care of what little risk is left.

Thanks guys, I live in a desert too, but we do get our share of snow in the winter. I’ll probably add a little. Thanks for the tip on the marine sealant, that makes a lot of sense.

No. I live in the PNW and have had my sherpa for 4 years. I have had zero leaks and it lives outsides 24/7. Silicone sealant on paint can trap water and cause corrosion. No sealant needed with the rubber blocks

Nope, followed the directions and I’m going on 3 years here in Maine.

Virginia, three years, several hurricanes, tropical storms, and noreasters. No silicone, no leaks. Just do NOT overtorque the bolts. The spec was in inch-pounds, not foot-pounds.

The rubber blocks are legit! Again, I'm using them not even on a Sherpa rack and I really felt safe with nothing else on there. And felt they'd hold up to the heat better.
