After market suspension?

My 2005 is in need of a suspension repair. Had a mechanic do the control arm and some other things but they said the dealer has to “charge” the struts or shocks? Went to the dealer and it’ll be $2800 to repair. He recommended we install an aftermarket system and that we’d be happier with that. Has anyone done this and what is recommended? Thank you!

 

I assume you have a model with the X-REAS suspension. From my limited knowledge of X-REAS, I would ditch it and put on all new shocks on all four corners.

4th gen - XREAS came on all SPORT models and some Limited models.

XREAS is a closed system so it can't be serviced. Once it goes bad and starts leaking, you can replace with XREAS again for $$$$$ or you can replace with traditional shocks like Bilstein 5100 or something, which a much more affordable route everyone takes.

When you replace, you can take the time to remove all the tube assemblies and center control absorbers, or leave everything on, except the shocks obviously.

Many report XREAS going bad between 100k and 200k. Mine lasted about 120k.

 

The Bilstein is what I’ve been reading about. Seems the way to go. I didn’t realize we could leave everything on (besides shocks) that seems a bit easier. Thanks so much for your reply!

 

I just removed my X System and went with these:

I am happy with results. I replaced rear springs at same time using Moog OEM replacements.

Mine was a lot more simple than fancy new stuffs .

Front: FJ Cruiser takeoffs
Rear: New Moog Coils and new Rough Country OE Style shocks

Nothing fancy but the ride improved big time since the old 180K suspension component were worn out.

 

@Kimbo - You might find to be helpful. It chronicles not just my suspension “journey” from used Tacoma takeoffs to an all-new Eibach Stage 1 setup but also my reasoning and philosophy for doing things as I did. There are pics, info, and service manual file links for removing the X-REAS too.

One thing about Bilstein - the 5100s are intended for trucks with extra weight (armor, bumpers, winches, etc.). Granted, ride is subjective but some people who don’t have extra weight sometimes feel the 5100’s ride is stiff. So consider 4600s if you go Bilstein.
