You even Costco bro?

Really? It seems like all the gas stations at Costco, BJs, grocery stores, restaurants stops, etc around here are one way. It’s much more efficient and less chaotic.

 

More importantly here in SoCal, Costco gas can be $.50 to a dollar less a gallon than nearby gas stations

i’m an early riser and they open early and they stay open late and they do get vehicles in and out in good order

Eh still has a chance of touching. I’m not worried about the hose itself, more of the dirt on it. I don’t mind waiting for the pump because I’m still in it less time than charging a microwave EV car.

Not near a Costco, so don't fill up there often, but at every other gas station, I'm always the idiot there - especially if its busy. My 2nd gen's fuel door is on the passenger side. And every gas station in town doesn't have hoses that reach to the passenger side. So I either need to find a spot on the passenger side, or if its super busy, be a jerk and pull up in front of somebody so both of the front of our cars are "kissing" bumpers and they have to back out. Or I could wait... But when its busy, you have to FIGHT for a gas pump. So sometimes I'm the gas station idiot.

 

Obviously it will vary but imagine a fuel pump in your parking spot or garage that dispenses a gallon an hour at less than Costco's price while you're parked overnight, often resulting in a full tank each morning.

How much time would you be spending at a gas station then?

Different technology should be thought of differently. You absolutely CAN treat it like a gas car and spend the 15-40 minutes to "fill up" (also will vary) if you wanted but why if there's a more convenient way? (obviously varies before someone says they tow 800 miles daily and park in a lot where electricity is banned)

Costcos here used to be about 40 to 50 cents cheaper than other gas stations. Now it’s only 5 cents cheaper. The price has gone up about $1.30 a gallon since this latest war started. WTF.

 

Pass through pumps are useful at Kroger - that way I can fill both my wife's car and my 4Runner at the same time. (to fully utilize $1.00 off per gal - up to 35 gals)

 

i see people waiting in line for chargers and I just cringe. They probably don’t have one at home or live in housing that doesn’t have any like apartments.

 

Just a few weeks ago I saw a new driver (17y/o girl) do a very aggressive k turn and parked backwards after pulling into the wrong side. The attendant was quick to tell her that the hose can reach around. The girl said "okay don't worry I've got it"... Obviously not realizing what the attendant was saying.

The other customers were snickering... Well except the two she almost hit while doing the k turn... They were more annoyed.

 

I know I often advocate for electrification and keeping an open mind here but depending on public fast charging is not something I'd rush to get into if I had other choices.

I already don't enjoy waiting for the Costco tire pressure machine since people can line up from multiple directions instead of an easy queue.

I'm gonna guess the line is more of an "I have time" or limited charging options - or heck, maybe they miss the Costco gas line experience! Definitely doable though.

It'd be ideal if we could run even 120v to public/apartment/street parking spots (like block heater hookups up north) but of course 240 would be nice too.

 

The general public is generally stupid. My costco put a self serve machine and I can’t imagine the chaos that’s comes with using it.

 

Damn, the Costco near me would be very hard to go in backwards. Just the way its set up with the one-way flow through the parking lot. The lines are usually too long (at any time of the day) for me to go there, but I have used it before and like others have said you'd have to ignore numerous signs, arrows, oncoming traffic, etc. to do that.

Not even considering that you would be 'cutting' in front a massive amount of people to do this.

 

This which-side-of-the-pump thing at Costco has always seemed to me to be a question of etiquette. Now, I don't really mind if someone wants to pull up to the quickest spot and wrap that long hose around the back of their vehicle. You do you and all that. But I can't bring myself to do it. I feel like I'm contributing to efficiency and good order by getting in a line that places the pump next to my gas hole.

Then again, I'm in NJ so there's an additional element here: None of us are pumping our own gas. We're making attendants do it. I guess this is part of the reason why it feels somewhat less than polite to make them do the wrap-around thing. More work for them. Also takes time away from serving their other customers. Each instance may be only a few extra seconds, but that adds up over the course of the day.

Which reminds me, someone should do a study: Do pump-your-own Costco lines move faster or slower than lines with attendants? I mean, sure, one could surmise it's faster when you pump yourself cause every car has its own dedicated pumper. But then again, how efficient are those drivers? In getting in and out of their cars? Fumbling with payment? Texting their BFFs when the pump has already stopped? At least in NJ we have professionals. Costco employees are no joke, they're well trained and know what they're doing.

At least at Costco stupid people can't leave their cars at the pump and go inside to shop. They do that at QT and every other place with several pumps and a store. Can't fix stupid.

New Jersey is the only state in the United States where it's illegal to pump your own gas, it was also until 2023 illegal in Oregon as well.

 

Well that's just weird. Seems like I'd drive the price of gas up and be a hassle for smaller stores to always have someone out there.

 

The state says it's for safety and the attendants have to be trained.

 

So if you see any New Jersey drivers in other states beware if it's at a gas station...they aren't trained and don't know how to properly pump gas, it could be your own life you save from a flaming fireball!!

 

Sounds like the gas pumpers union has been bribing people!

 

I’ve met a few people from New Jersey. It’s probably better for all that they don’t pump their own gas.

 

I pumped my own gas once in Oregon at a little station near The Dalles. It was the odometer type pump where you flipped the lever to reset the pump. The girl looked at me funny when I handed her the money for gas and told her I already pumped it.
