Would you like the 6th more if the engine bay didn't look like a rats nest?

I would like the 6th Gen a whole lot better if it had 4 more cylinders and no turbo.

Toyota may have seen the numerous reports of chewed fuel injector wires and knock sensor wires under the 5th gen intake manifold and decided a visual rat's nest is better than a literal rat's nest.

But if you want to risk a literal rat's nest, here's a way to make it happen, compatible with gasser and hybrid models: https://www.victory4x4.com/product/V4RGNC-24.html

You're right. But, the turbo was known for being very reliable. "Bulletproof" was the term used in many articles written about it. It only had 135HP/173lb-ft of torque though, so it was slow as molasses. The new 6th Gen 4banger turbo has 278HP/317lb-ft of torque and we'll find out soon enough about the reliability of that engine.

Well yeah, if you build a 2.4L turbo with only 135 horsepower of course it is gonna be bullet proof. I think the 5SFE 2.2 L in gen 3 and 4 Camry made that much horse power and only a little less torque.

Reliability doesn't matter since Toyota is intent on staying with Turbos a this point so any findings is a moot point. People will buy them if they want a 4Runner. When it is the only option, the take up rate will be unsurprisingly, 100%.

I would like the 6th gen more if it had more interior space and was less expensive. The look of the engine is pretty low on my priority list.

I agree on the interior space, does seem abit cramped and they sure are expensive but not out of range of anything else out on the market. I paid 68K for a 25' Ram ProMaster 2500 which is basically a paper thin box with 2 seats and a 8" info screen. And the reason I say paper thin is my 21' ProMaster was pretty much driven through by a van going 25 mph. Complete total.....

I hear ya Loco, considering a 1987 4R weighed around 3500lbs while a 6 Gen weighs in at roughly 5500lbs. Yeah time will tell.

    Everyone has turbos now.

I saw a guy park a new Audi and it one of those rattly crappy sounding engines. I sort of looked at the hood as I walked out of the hardware store listening to it.

I almost asked him is something wrong with your engine? It sounds awful and then I remembered ahh it’s a 4 banger noisy turbo in park

Have you heard any of the new Toyota stuff as it takes off from a redlight or stop sign?
The newer model Camry and Rav4 and the Land Cruiser and 4Runner all have direct injection and rattle like a 1990 22RE with 250,000+ miles

Yep I sure have. That’s my point most manufacturers have gone that route even the luxury brands.

It’s a step backwards in my opinion.

Hey now! My old 22re never sounded rattly.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 36 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 36yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
The 22RE you heard must’ve needed timing chain/guides, it is about the only mechanical issue those engines develop. Aftermarket steel guides with a friction pads last much longer than the POS OEM plastic guides that fall apart resulting in chain slap. You can’t hardly tell mine is running.

Between that and the auto start-stop, a typical stop light now sounds like a bunch cars with severe engine problems having trouble staying running.

Thankfully there's a company out there to help combat the problem that was never a problem:

    https://www.autostopeliminator.com/?srsltid=AfmBOopzaMahZRdgSLjddiGqrM9WA02E6OtlrrwAnNjRoQKshWEaAfbe

Last summer when I was stuck in my gawd awful loaner vehicle (a Nissan Sentra) I screamed everytime the engine would shut off at a stop light. I hate that feature and that car. I actually prayed that God would make the car blow up (with or without me in it).

Who really cares what it looks like. There’s tons of space to work all around the engine bay; fluids, dipstick, oil filter, coolant drain plug, everything is easy-access. Even the turbo would be easy to service, that is, if you’ll ever need to. Just like the way some people around here like to claim how Toyota “used to build them”, you could work on the 2.4T blindfolded.

Fuck yeah, I'll take it, especially when it looks like this. Even I can do a rebuild on this one with a hoist and 4 case of beer.

or this gas version that was mentioned earlier.

Just for reference, here is the much vaunted 2JZ.

let's see if our resident long time owners+tinkers of the T24A motors can spot the difference between those three and the engine being discussed here.

Well, at least those people can use Tesla's FSD (Full Self Driving) feature. Its stupid. Its called (quote) "Full Self Driving - Supervised" (end quote). Why is it called FULL SELF DRIVING if its SUPERVISED?! That ain't Full Self Driving. Thats Tesla making $20,000 off you for an option that appears to be self driving, but its still supervised. The future is messed up. We are so screwed. Why? Because of stupid electric cars and self driving. I drive because its fun. I don't want my car to drive me. That isn't FUN. I drive a gas car because it MAKES NOISE! Real cars make noise! Real cars burn oil and use gas. Real cars have V6's and V8's. Real cars don't take an hour to fuel up with electricity. Real cars are muscle cars, hot rods, 4Runners, Tundras, and all that. Silent cars are no fun. Long live gasoline cars!! Sorry for the rant. :)

No worries, I was poking fun back at you!

I had not heard of blind people working on cars. I guess it is possible. In all my years of working as a mechanic, I have developed a skill of using fingertips as eyes while I put something back together by feel. Think about that spot where a bolt has to go but you can't see it at all!

And you are absolutely right about people that can't see while driving, or probably while doing other things!
