Woolwax Coverage

Hey everyone,

I just had my 4Runner undercarriage coated in Woolwax. I was only able to find one place that did it 250 miles away from me. One thing the installer told me was that he doesn't coat the transmission and transfer case housing (on top of avoiding the exhaust, brakes etc.).

Is this normal? I have never read or heard about not applying woolwax or fluid film to the transmission housing. He said it's because those components never rust, and it makes it a lot easier for mechanics to work on them if ever needed (vs a woowax covered transmission that makes a mess).

I was going to probably just coat the transmission myself, but wondering if leaving it uncoated is the right way to do it.

Isn't the transmission case made of cast aluminum and won't rust?

Yep, they don't coat that.

I'm up for my refresh this month. I'm looking forward to enhanced protection. I went in after the last one an did some extra on my own.

 

Yeah I might end up doing some extra on my own. I got under there this morning and saw some spots that looked thin or he missed.

 

Not trying to threadjack, but have been thinking of doing waxoyl on mine as it reads that it lasts a good bit longer than woolwax/fluid film. Any feedback from the forum on that? <thread drift now off>

 

fluid film flows better into various crevices inside frame. wool wax sticks thicker outside. do both

 

So, I'm fairly sold on going with Fluid Film....am I better off doing it in late Fall/early Winter....or can I do it now? I know it's lanolin based, but I do not know if the summertime higher temperatures will cause it to liquify and run out of the frame, etc. onto the driveway rather than stay inside all the nooks 'n crannies to protect the metal.

No, it doesn't run out. The only place I've seen any come out was were I put a tremendous excess into the rail under the radiator, and that was just a spot on the upper side of the front skid. Not even visible until you pull it to change the oil.

As far as I'm concerned, the sooner you do it the better. People have posted photos of rust starting more or less immediately. I had mine done in a couple weeks after purchase in May and touched it up in the fall.
