About to buy a new 2021 4Runner TRD OFF.. do these have common engine or wheel abs sensor issues, or emission fail issues?

Welcome from Wisconsin! The 4.0 engine is tried and true, it is no "economy king". The rest of the 4Runner is about as reliable as any other vehicle. They are ALL subject to failure at any given time or mileage. Understand you doing your homework before you buy a new vehicle, some are more reliable than others, and Toyota has a pretty good track record as far as recalls, maintenance issues and reliability.

The reputation of the 4runner is larger than life but the car is cool and has a high resale value. I think you can choose 2 paths (assuming you aren’t getting it to do crazy mods). 1) drive and trade new before it needs tires, brakes, shocks, exhaust, or anything breaks and this can be surprisingly cost effective 2) keep it till it’s too expensive to fix (could be a very long time).
People will always claim the “older one”was made better. 4th gen had the V8, 3rd gen supposed to be the best, etc. 5th gen is popular now because they have features and they run good. I myself have grown accustomed to having the heated seats and backup camera etc. I would not be surprised if Toyota pooches the 6th gen to be uncool in some major way. How about a 4 cylinder turbo that only lasts 100k?

The current 5th gen is in its 12 model year. Any new model year issues have long been worked out already so its actually the best time to buy one. I mean this isn't a Bronco.....

No, they only give problems if the owner treated it badly

The 5th gen is considered one of the most reliable vehicles available. It's not fast, or exciting, but rock solid. It's one advantage to buying a vehicle that was developed like 13 years ago.

Known issues are front differential needle bearing and Entune is dumb. But they might have improved Entune since 2019.

About the worst thing that is universally agreed upon is the mpg. This comes with the 4x4 weight, boxy frame, and the strong engine/tranny combo. Know what you are getting there and I think there are no surprises down the road.

2 Issues...gas mileage...and rust / paint issues..Toyota's always had problems with paint lasting, clear coat peeling..and rust underneath the vehicle..other than that, a solid vehicle, when taken care of, easily hit 250K plus w/0 issues

KDSS can be a legit issue down the road.

XREAS will break eventually, you can just remove it.

As others said no other real issues aside from Toyota rust.

There is another consideration here each year all new cars get more sophisticated electronics. That’s the scary part for longevity and longterm repair costs. The 2021 gen 5 is infinitely more complicated than the first gen 5. The engine and tranny etc are tried and true but the rest not.

This is where Toyota’s lack of use of new technology hopefully will be a benefit.

Thats just baseless fear mongering. Are you going to stop upgrading your phone and computer every few years because the new tech isn't "reliable".

Don't get me wrong as a 3rd gen owner I fully appreciate the quality build they put into the vehicle and I totally get its all about profit for manufacturers these days including Toyota but the fact of the matter is a brand new 21 is just as and more reliable (because of the miles) as a 2010 5th gen with a 100k miles

I was car shopping, the 4Runner was on my shortlist. Doing a little research, brought me to this forum. Following a lot of the topics on here, I was sold on the 4Runner. I purchased mine in early June, and it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Just stick around for a little while and read up on topics that interest you.

Nope, I upgrade my phone and computer because the OLD technology becomes unreliable and outdated. It is happening electronically with cars as well. And moving very fast. Toyota is not excepted.
