Got my first rock ding at 5200 miles . Not a shatter but a ding less than a dime across with about an 1/8”or so crack . Should I do it myself with one of those 18 dollar auto parts store kits or have Safelite do it for $42.00 ?

My vote- Let a “professional” company try to fix it. I got a chip and small crack in my windshield and I had a local auto glass guy fix it. I watched him as I talked with him, and one thing he did was attach a suction cup on vacuum pump hose to the damaged area. I asked him what that was and he said it sucks out any moisture that may be in the glass crack.

Then he applied / injected sealer in to the chip and crack. I can’t even tell where the chip was.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Do it yourself. I tried the $18 dollar one a few years ago on my Tacoma. After I was done you couldn't tell the chip was there unless you reaaaaaaaaaaaally looked.

Let someone else that deals with glass fix it. That way when it runs you can direct your anger to someone else. In all seriousness, I've had pretty good luck with fixes, if they're caught early. But, I will say, get used to it. I've lost count of how many windshields I've put in my 4R. For some reason, maybe because of how they're near vertical, they attract a lot of rocks.

Just went through this. My insurance company paid for an auto glass place to repair with no deductible. Cheaper for them in the long run. Anything over dime size is problematic as well as spider cracks. Time is not your friend. The glass place stated the longer you wait to fix the more contamination/cracking is a problem for the repair. Mine was dime sized but afterwards it's still visible but not growing. Windshield replacement would have triggered my deductible plus all the extra issues that can come with. I'll live with it.

Get it repaired ASAP - no ded with most ins companies. You will get another. My wife's Ford Edge has two repairs in the WS - we take it more on road trips for better MPG highway driving. I have several nicks in my ORP WS, but-none that need repair so far w/7200 miles. 4runners windshields are rock magnets.
